To start off I'll say that I've never seen a problem quite like this one before and I've dealt with some pretty messed up modems/routers.

Overview:
My Internet disappears every minute or so. But it only disappears for 1-2 seconds. When viewing web pages this isn't a problem. When the Internet cuts off and I get a “Address Not Found” message I simply refresh and it's back. However when I'm downloading files or viewing streaming video, that's when it gets irritating. Both video and file downloads simply stop every 20-30 seconds. I've avoided the download problem by installing a download manager with pause/restart functions but the video problem persists.

My system:
  • Windows XP-home edition SP-2

Hardware:
  • Belkin wireless G+ Mimo router model# F5d9230-4
  • Motorola SURFboard cable modem model# SB5120
  • I'm on a netgear Internet through home power wires connection (this
isn't the problem all 5 computers are having this problem -both wireless and direct through ethernet cable)
Other Information:
  • 3 computers are on the wireless network
  • My computer and one other are on a wired connection
  • Mine is through a Internet to house power line adapter
  • Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
  • All computers are experiencing this problem
  • The router is less than 4 months old
  • I'm using Mozilla Firefox 3 browser (I've tried using 3 others and the problem doesn't disappear)

I've given up trying to fix this problem on my own. I've: reset the router to factory defaults; reset the modem to factory defaults; ran the software that came with the router; and powered down all devices numerous times.

If anyone has an idea for a solution I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance!

Also, if any more information is needed I'm more than willing to provide.

Edit: I don't know if this is needed but on average all 5 computers use .5-3% of available bandwidth.

Re: Strange Problems with Internet Connection

Sorry for the double post. The edit button seems to have disappeared.

Anyways, here's the exact text of the "reset" message.
Connection Interrupted

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.
My connection seems to be getting worst by the day. Right now it's almost unusable.

Note: Could it be the modem? It's 3-5 years old.

edit:
I've pretty much ruled out the router. By the way, that little "connected" light on my modem sure blinks allot. Isn't that bad?

Also, does anyone know the ip to access a motorola surfboard modem? I can't remember it for the life of me.

Re: Strange Problems with Internet Connection

This whole 'no edit after 30 minutes' thing is annoying. = /
Anyways, I figured out the ip for my modem (192.168.100.1).

Here's the info from the modem:
Downstream------------------- Value
Frequency--------------------- 543000000 Hz
Signal to Noise Ratio----------- 35 dB
QAM-------------------------- QAM256
Network Access Control Object- ON
Power Level------------------ -10 dBmV (shouldn't this be near 0?)

Upstream----------Value
Channel ID-------- 10
Frequency-------- 32000000 Hz
Ranging Service ID 3298
Symbol Rate------ 2.560 Msym/s
Power Level------- 47 dBmV

Re: Strange Problems with Internet Connection

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

When I tried to do a speed test I got this error:

Over all today my connection has been much better. Last night I could barely do anything online. For some of my posts in this thread I had to attempt three or four times before it would work. If I were to sum up my internet connection I would have to say that it's chaotic.

Thank you for the help so far!

Also, today I spoke with comcast. Next Tuesday I will be receiving a new modem.

Re: Strange Problems with Internet Connection

Thanks for all of the help! :D
I hope the new modem will solve my problems.

After looking up the reviews for my current modem I found out that this problem isn't so uncommon.
