I posted this earlier, but my thread was closed. I was advised to wait until my malware issues were addressed before tackling this. Those issues, thankfully, are resolved. So...

This has happened every time I've shut my PC down for 3 months. My computer doesn't seem to be affected by it as far as operation goes. It's just annoying. Is there any way to fix this without losing everything I've downloaded since then?

I get (of course) the blue screen with this toward the top

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Then these codes show up:

STOP: 0x0000000A (0x000000B0, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804EF3EE)

This started shortly after I downloaded a trial version of Norton Internet Security. One of the components didn't install properly. I have removed all the components as far as I can tell.

I would appreciate any help you could give me with this.

Thanks!

Hello again Jamyeda,

I'm glad that your malware issues are resolved.
Please understand the reasoning behind my actions earlier...now let's see if we can resolve this problem..

When this issue started, you say 3 months ago, had you recently (back then) uninstalled anything on your computer?

Such as,had you updated a Device Driver; installed or uninstalled new software, or installed/uninstalled any Hardware on this machine?

This information will be the basis of determining how we plan to help you fix this annoying issue.

Perhaps it might be caused by remnances of that Norton Product you installed.
Please download the Norton® Removal Tool; 'save' it to your computer; then install it and follow the instructions to run the program.

Please post back with the information and the results of how the removal tool went.

Kind Regards,

Problem solved! I don't know how exactly. As you know, I got rid of the malware. Then, I downloaded and installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. The next time I shut down my computer, the error didn't occur nor has it since.

I have automatic updates turned on, so I don't know why I didn't even know Service Pack 3 was available.

Thanks again for your time.
