Hello,
I dont know if my previous message got thru or not so I am re-sending.

I have a Seagate 250GB Internal HDD (st3250624A)SMART Status Healthy. It is installed in drive bay 1 as a slave to bay 0 on my Primary IDE Port, and is operating absolutly perfect....Exept.. Thou I perchased the drive as an extra storage device (250GB) My OS(Win XP Home SP2(Build 2600))is telling me it sees only 137.44GB of it..
I am quickly running to the end of that capacity and would really like to use the other half..

I have run Seagates tools program and originaly installed it as 1 large partition. My OS wouldn't go for that. So I reconfigured to 2 partitions of wich only 1 is being used by Windows.
I have updated my BIOS to (Phoenix Tech, LTD 6.00 PG 4/22/2003) and no change. Everywhere I ask I get told "Just use it as a 137GB Drive". I can't exept that.

Here is my system config....

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

click start menu, run, and type in "regedit" or "regedt32

Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters

On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1

Quit Registry Editor.
Restart the PC.

hope this helps

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

I bet I got you ???????

you installed the windows OS with a win xp cd that does not have service pack two intergrated into the cd

after you installed windows on the boot drive >>>> then you added sp-2 ????

the addition of sp-2 after the OS is installed does not "fix" the 137 gig drive barrier

you have two options

A) use a program like partition magic to fix the drive and get back your un-used data storage

B) make a slipstreamed install CD with sp-3 intergrated into the disk / then perform a brand new OS install >>>>>>> YUCK
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm >>>>> there is the info: but I have a MUCH easier way of doing this >>>>>> thank-god

the red pill or the blue pill ??????????????

let us know which way you want to go and we can expound further ?

best regards

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

Thanks linderman, I would be "super inthused" to know more about your esier way!!!!!!
Yuck is right!!

I recieved this computer from a buddy of mine, who got it from a buddy of his, who was a bar owner that had it hooked up to servailace cams at the bar..
Well he let it record 4 vid feeds on an internal 80Gb HDD until it crashed.
He didn't understand how it got so non-opperational so fast..
Der-it's software wasn't written to compensate for inate ignorance..!!
It was full!!! and Quit.. He got mad at the sales company and thru the entire thing out and got a new one.....

It was retrieved and given to me, FREE!!

Bichen!!!

The Point of the life story is that it had Windows XP Home installed on it when I recieved it. I didn't install SP2..

However, Your sequence of events sounds correct..
I have been using the drive as a storage drive and program drive as well. I really don't want to refomat it!!!!!!!!!!!! But I will if need be..

Please get back to me with the "Easy Way" Whenever You can!!!

Thanks Alot for your time,

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

well the "easy" way is to use partition magic to make the rest of the drive operational

if you dont want to spend the approx $40.00 on partition magic

then you will need to make an updated windows XP Install CD using Auto Streamer

once you have an updated win xp install CD / then you will need to back-up your data and do a reformat and clean install

thats all there is for options

I mis quoted alittle bit >>>>> I meant I know an easier way to make the updated win xp disk than those instructions printed in the Elder Geek article / but all the pertient info about the "method" is there

let me know how you wish to proceed ???? and we can make an outline

do you have access to any other hard drives where we could store your data with the help of an image file program until the new reformat on the 250 is done ????? the "extra" drive needs to be at least 80 gigs of available space to back-up a 137 gig drive ??????

let us know ?????????? :wave:

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

the things you will need to make a win xp disk with Service Psck two intergarated into the disk are as follows

slipstream program: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Autostreamer-Download-13918.html

your win xp CD:

here is the service pack two package: (down the one thats for installation into multiple computers / you must choose that one to get SP-2 into a folder on your hard drive !)

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

Well the first thing I should tell you is, The install disk for XP home I do not have. This computer was given to me.

Second thing is that it allready has SP2 installed..

Third thing is ,, Now I am having Technical Dificulty with my LAN card on the PCI bus(internal) SiS 900 Fast ethernet adapter...

It is acting all haywire, It keeps telling me its cable is unpluged then 4 seconds later it reconnects itself, then 1-5 seconds later its diconnected , and so on, and so on...!!!

Boy Im Having a ,GOOD Time with this sucker... I have to wait for the conn. to reconnect then send/recieve anything..

However it has been connected the entire time I've been typing this responce..
I'll see when I try to send...

I think its some kind of software conflict, but it could be my LAN Cable..

Back to the subject, I most likely will need assistance with the disk..

Thanks

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

I tried Saegate DiskWiz for windows, but it will only let me config my root (C:)Drive..
Nowhere in there could I get it to mess with my E:drive (The 250GB)

So it didn't help. Its realy weird how the BIOS and some parts of Wimdows sees the correct size..

Looking at the data from Belarc's sheet I orig. Posted...

Any Ideas???
Thanks Alot,

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

The trick is / your machine was originally loaded with win xp (native) which means no sp-2 at that time

adding sp-2 after the hard drive has been installed does not fix or enable the 48 bit LBA

BTW: you can borrow any friends win xp install CD then make your own disk with sp-2 added to it >>>> the versions must match >>>> if you computer has win xp home eidtion then your friends must be win xp home >>>> you cant mix home and pro editions

then you use YOUR win xp install key code which can be obtained by running the Jelly Bean Key finder

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

I strongly suggest you get this matter in order / once your OS crashes you will be S.O.L.

it sounds to me as if you are DUE for a fresh install

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

I Have no Friends with computers. They dont understand them. thats why the one friend I've got gave me this one, He didn't know what he had...

The way I figure it, I saved it from a not so savory fate..
Witch would have been sure to be a tragic, and trashy doom!!!

I do however have a Windows XP Professonal (Clean Install) Disk.. But it's not a "Registered" Copy.. Not the upgrade..,Arnt they the same, just slightly different???
I do have the CD Key for it.

Thanks,
Cho

Re: Seagate 250GB Int HDD Win XP only sees 137GB

Howdy there.. I wanted to let you know that I have resolved the Hard drive problem... With extra thanks to you guys!!!!

I managed to move everything off the drive to my main drive.. There wasn't as much as I thaught on it... Then I just went into "Win Disk Manager" and deleted the existing partition and reformated the entire drive...
It saw the entire drive and formatted all 250GB to one large partition, No Problem!!

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all of You
