[SOLVED] Screen Flickering on Laptop

I have an Acer laptop running Media Centre with the screen that appears to be flickering with the text too big and slanted off the screen.

It is not a loose connection on the lid

Clue - connecting another monitor to the vga output gives a good picture and won't start in safe mode

Where do I start looking ?
