[SOLVED] Restart from hibernate fails after installation of SP3

Hi,

I tried several times in the last 2 years to install SP3, but I never succeeded to restart from hibernate, so that I always had to return to SP2.

As MS won't support SP2 any longer, I now HAVE to install SP3 defintively. So I hope, somebody can give me the right advice. The problem is as follows:

No problems at all with SP1 and SP2. No changes in Bios or other software. After installing SP3 (with all actual updates) the system comes up from hibernate with the resume-bar up to the end of loading. Then it hangs for about 2 or 3 minutes and afterwords the following screen (sometimes only!) shows "preparing hibernating" and then hangs definitely.

I watched, that the writing of the hibernate-file follows VERY short time after the message "preparing hibernating" instead of the former time of about 5 to 10 seconds, so that I assume, that the hibernate-file is written too early and incorrect and therefore corrupt every time.

I tried already the following:

- I closed all programs before hibernating
- I deleted and recreated hiberfil.sys
- I replaced msgina.dll by old version, which worked fine
- I enlarged pagefile.sys
- I defragmented the volume and let run chkdsk

What else (instead running furtheron SP2) can I try, to get "my hibernate" back. Hopefully somebody can help!

and welcome to the Forum

FWIW . . I do not use hibertate on XP systems . . too problematic. In Power settings, I set the time for the hard drive to shutdown but turn off suspend and hibernate

Re: Restart from hibernate fails after installation of SP3

1. is this a desktop or laptop?
2. Is it working at the moment albeit with Windows XP SP2? or is it now permanently trying to come out or hibernate?
3. Does it go into hibernate while you are installing SP3? If so why don't you move your mouse to stop hibernation?
4. Deleting the hiberfil.sys should stop it trying to resume from hibernation.
5. If you have a UPS connected via serial data cable then disconnect this as well.

Thanks, but not to use hibernate won't help me, because I need this mode for several time scheduled operations - and up to now it worked always fine with SP2!

It is a Desktop with AMD-X2 CPU and 3 GB memory, running XP-professional
2. Is it working at the moment albeit with Windows XP SP2? or is it now permanently trying to come out or hibernate?
It works fine with (restored version) of SP2. With SP3 it is coming out after hibernating and then hangs with the very last message "preparing hibernate", which was shown before writing hibernate-file.
3. Does it go into hibernate while you are installing SP3? If so why don't you move your mouse to stop hibernation?
No, it is only going to hibernate, when I start it myself. The system is NOT hibernating by itself and does not permanently restart by itself. SP3 was completely installed and is working correct except the hibernating problem.
4. Deleting the hiberfil.sys should stop it trying to resume from hibernation.
Then I get a total reboot, which needs a couple of minutes instead the expected fast coming up with my last applications, especially the scheduled ones!
5. If you have a UPS connected via serial data cable then disconnect this as well.
Nothing connected.
Re: Restart from hibernate fails after installation of SP3

Do you have any USB devices plugged in while resuming? If so unplug them and see what happens.

Hi, I unplugged ALL USB-devices, including even wireless USB keyboard and mouse ==> same error!

The problem seems to be, that the hibernate-file is written BEFORE ALL functions are completed, which are necesseray, to write down the file correctly. So the system hangs after the wake up with the last screen before shutting down (which was "preparing hibernate").
Re: Restart from hibernate fails after installation of SP3

I am stumped. I have been looking up this problem on the internet and the only solutions I could come up with were:
1. Disable Hibernate, restart the PC, Enable hibernate, restart the PC and try again.
2. Remove your network card drivers in device manager, restart your PC, reinstall/update the drivers and disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". (Device manager -> Network card properties -> Power management). Restart and try again
Re: Restart from hibernate fails after installation of SP3

What is the brand and model of the PC or if a custom build the motherboard, some boards have a bios update to address this most do not.

I did this several times. This only rewrites the hibernat.sys-file. As I experienced, it is not necessecary, to reboot between deaktivating and reaktivating hibernate-mode, to do this.
2. Remove your network card drivers in device manager, restart your PC, reinstall/update the drivers and disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". (Device manager -> Network card properties -> Power management). Restart and try again

Thanks - this was the solution!!!! Following your hint, I disabled the powersaving option for the additional TV-Card of my PC and no everything works fine!

I am really happy now - thank you again, AlbertMC2 ;-)

There was no Bios-update available. I had already the newest one.

Finally, after two years of experimentig, my problem is solved now, thanks to the suggestion of AlbertMC2. Thank you all!
