HI all

I have just recently upgraded from xp to vista ultra , im verry happy so far after all the updates and sound card drama my rig is running great !!

Befor the switch i ran a wireless network in the house so the other pc's and the kids can be on for what they say is homework and sutch ! lol ,

My pc is primarley for gameing so bandwidth is verry important to me , im using a linksays wierless G router and have it set with my pc as the admin box [i think? ,i remember setting somthing up that way, gave it a password so the neighbors couldent log on ectt.. but it was 3 years ago lol], i have my pc hard wired to the router while the rest use the wireless .. this is so i can get max bandwidth or so i think i can ..lol (bandwidth junky)

I was told and believe that all i would have to do is plug back in and it would all still be set up ! the router settings are internal right ? so i tryed it , my box found the net no prob but the wireless side of the router is not on (the light for wireless is not blinking like it does when its on its dark like when i have it off) now keep in mind i was constantly using the settings in the router to dissable and inable the wireless side of the router turnning off i-net for the kids so i could make sure they did home work, chores ectt.. before playing , surfing ecttt.. i used it as a bargining tool !! haha anyway the prob is now after pluging in the proper cables i see the network showing the modem, router and my pc , ok that cool but when i try to get into the router settings [im using the shortcut from the old xp that i copyed over you know the address or ip of the router its the same weather i type it or not right?]
it comes up with the password window ! normal but this alwase had the proper username passwords saved so all i would do is click and im in .. ok now the username/password box's are empty and i have no idea what they were !! ive tryed everything i can remember but no luck ,i can't enter the router set up to see or make changes ..

Is there anything i can do to retrive or recreate the passwords to get in or do i need to compleetly start over, or for that matter can i start over ??? wiping the router and creating a new network ?? keep in mind i NEED the max bandwidth for my pc and the ability to turn the wireless off and on ..

does the set up wizard have the proper set up for me ? hard wired while the rest are wireless ? i dont need to network the pc's togeather just make them all able to get online ,is that all in the same ??
sorry if this is a stupid question im just not sure on what to do and how to do it ..
thanks in advance
kro...

Re: re setting up my old network with vista

This is a simple fix but it will take a little bit of time to set up the network settings for the other computers again.

The should be a tiny reset button on the router, you'll need to keep it pressed down for around 30+ seconds while the router is on. This will reset it to the default settings. Usually the router's default password is admin and nothing for the user name.

Then just start setting everything up again.

The encrytion that you should be using is WPA as WEP can be cracked in under a minute.

Re: re setting up my old network with vista

Hi, you are correct you do not need to network the other computers they will be able to access the internet through the router. If you reset the router as advised by Mcninjaguy you will need to recreate your connection ie put in user name and password again. If as you say you do not remember them (always write down this information to avoid these problems in future) you will need to contact your ISP. If you haven't done this yet open a CMD prompt with elevated privileges and type ipconfig /all The default gateway will allow you to access your router.

Re: re setting up my old network with vista

I'm glad you got it fixed!
You aren't using the default password right? Its easy for hackers to get in routers if the password is default.

If this thread is solved mark it solved under thread tools.
