Hi,
Just trying understand how self signed certificates work. I have created created a self signed certificate named server.cer and a private key called server.key. I have plcaed them into the applications web configuration on the server as required.

My Question is, when a client connects to the above Application server via ssl, does it actually download the certificate to their browser or are the details you see (clicking on padlock in I.E. etc.) just details of the certificate ?????

Your help is appreciated.

Cheers
Jeff

Re: Question on SSL certificates

Hi wmorri,
Thanks for getting back to me. I found the following on the site you gave me above (http://www.ourshop.com/resources/ssl_step2.html)

2. The server returns it's own random data to be used for encryption as well as other secure sockets layer information (including it's ssl certificate with a long string of characters called a public key) that the browser will need in step 4 (step 1 on next page).

So I think this answers my question.

Thanks very much for your help, very much appreciated.

Cheers
Jeff
