I'm running XP SP2 on an old Sony Vaio laptop with an Athlon processor. The system has been perfectly stable for years. Last week I did three things: a Disk Cleanup, a Defragment, and uninstalled AVG Free 7.5 in anticipation of upgrading to new AV software.

My laptop now seems to have a problem with certain programs such as jusched.exe (the Java update checker). They do the 'ended unexpectedly' thing every time ('do I want to send an error report to Microsoft? etc).

This applies to .exes that I launch (e.g. Windows Update, setup files for new software installations) as well as background apps like the Java one. The major everyday apps - MS Office, Firefox etc - run no problem.

Any ideas on the cause and perhaps a solution? My best guess is that either
a) I accidentally got rid of a required shared file during Disk Cleanup
b) uninstalling AVG 7.5 has screwed with my settings somewhere beyond my comprehension

Unfortunately I was stupid enough to forget to create a system restore point before I started all of the above...I only have myself to blame for the current troubles I guess.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I solved this finally by running CHKDSK with the 'fix files' option ticked. A couple of registry entries and system32 files were fixed by the tool and no problems since.
