Hi, my son is building a new PC from scratch and has asked for my help.
Basically it is a ASUS M4A79TXD EVO motherboard with a TX850W power supply and a Radeon HD5770 XFX Graphics card.

Having assembled the various components it would not boot only giving the three beeps that indicated "no VGA" (the fan on the graphics card does spin) We then used an old PCI Video card instead and the system booted. We installed Windows to the hard drive and ensured all drivers were up to date.
We replaced the Video with the new HD7550 card and once again only got the the 3 beeps (No VGA) - We then changed the PCI-E power feed to the graphics card with the double four way to six way adaptor supplied with the card.

Now almost nothing, Upon supplying power the case fans spin up but the system does not boot, there are no beeps and pressing the power on button does nothing.
Removing the HD5770 has no effect. Inspection of the double four to six adaptor leads me to believe it is incorrect . One of the plugs is wired yellow, brown, black the other is yellow, black, brown.

Has using this suspect power lead broken the power supply. what can I test/do the rectify the situation please.

Thanks

Re: Power supply problem with new build

It shouldn't matter as both brown and black on those adapters are ground. You can toss the adapter anyway as it's only required with PSU's which do not have the 6 pin PCIe plug.

Thanks, excellent news, so using this did not kill the PSU, so why now no beeps or any activity other than fans spinning?

Re: Power supply problem with new build

I have cleared the Cmos (by using the motherboard jumper)
The CPU is a quad processor - i'm not sure which type - my son is out doing son things!!!!
Will the type of CPU make a difference? It sure has a big heat sink on it - with it's own fan too, this spins briefly when power first applied. It was working continuously while setting up with the "old" video card.

Re: Power supply problem with new build

We need to know the Brand & Model of all the hardware.
Mobo-CPU-RAM-Graphics-Hdd-PSU.

It is always best to test on the bench before assembling in the case to be assured that all the hardware is functional.
Remove EVERYTHING from the case
Set the motherboard on a non conductive surface. The motherboard box is perfect for this. DO NOT PLACE THE MOTHERBOARD ON THE STATIC BAG! It can actually conduct electricity! We are going to try and assemble a running system outside of the case.
Install the CPU and heat sink. Intel Guide AMD Guide
Install 1 stick of RAM.
Install the video card and attach the power supply connection(s) to the card if your card needs it.
Connect the monitor to the video card.
Connect the power supply to the motherboard with both the 24pin main ATX Power connection and the separate 4 or 8 pin power connection.
Connect power to the power supply.
Do NOT connect ANYTHING else. Make sure you have the power connector on the CPU fan connected.
Use a small screwdriver to momentarily short the power switch connector on the motherboard. Consult your motherboard manual to find which two pins connect to your case's power switch. Then touch both pins with a screwdriver to complete the circuit and boot the system.

If all is well, it should power up and you should get a display. Then assemble the parts into the case and try again. If the system now fails to boot, you have a short in the case and need to recheck your motherboard standoffs.

If the system does not boot after this process, then you most likely have a faulty component. You'll need to swap parts, start with the power supply, until you determine what is defective

Re: Power supply problem with new build

The processor is an AMD2 Phenom X4 3.2Ghtz Quad core Black edition
Memory Kingston hyper X 1333 2Gb ram (2 sticks)
Mobo ASUS M4A79TXD EVO
PSU corsair TX850W
Graphics Radeon HD5770 XFX
(can use old PCI-E graphics card as alternative test but the HD5770 is the one we want to use)

Re: Power supply problem with new build

Ok having assembled the components outside the case, there is still a problem.
The outlet we purchased from thinks the motherboard might be faulty and has asked for the return of the Mobo and Graphics for testing - So hopefully problem over now.
Thanks for the help
