Hi guys,

I've just fixed up this nice old compaq sr1739uk desktop and have it plugged into my HdTV via a VGA cable which is fine and dandy for the picture. As for sound i've got a 3.5mm jack to jack cable(one side green and one side blue) which i use to connect my main HP desktop to my Acer HD monitor for sound as it seems to be the only cable that works on that monitor which only has an audio out port for sound.
Soooo, i thought the cable might work on my bigger Toshiba TV but soon realized it doesn't probably because it's a normal headphone socket on my tv and my questions after all that explaining are;
Can i get this cable to work somehow for my bigger tv so i can hear sound?
if not which type of cable will i need to go out and grudgingly buy because i'm a cheapskate? :grin:

Just to clarify but as you might have guessed there is no HDMI connector on the PC as it is about 6 years old and also it runs Linux Mint 11.

Any help much appreciated

Mucho Love

Re: Pc to Tv Audio Question

If the tv has rca cable ports, then you can plug the sound there but you will only get the left or right (white or red) sound, depending which port you plug it in. or you can get an adaptor to your cable where you can plug into both left and right.

what is your tv model number?

Re: Pc to Tv Audio Question

I just looked at the manual and it shows three different ports for audio. what I suggested before should work.

Re: Pc to Tv Audio Question

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, RCA cable it is then, i thought i might have had to get one of those but i just wanted to make sure i couldn't use the jack to jack cable instead. Just out of curiosity though, would a computer as old as the Compaq desktop take a graphics/sound card with a HDMI slot without a problem? i'm thinking about upgrading this desktop in the future just for general usage.

Thanks

Re: Pc to Tv Audio Question

Hi,

Thanks for the info dogg, the power supply i won't be upgrading soon so i will probably go for a low range one in the future. As for the thread question itself I took sobeit's advice and went in search for an rca cable and managed to buy one for £1!!!! Got it out a poundland shop lol. It works like a charm so thanks again guys.
