Hello,

My old custom built PC is having trouble, whenever I turn it on, it randomly turns off between 1 minute and 10 minutes. The computer is running Windows 7. The weird part is that the PC shuts down but the power light is still on but the loading light is completely off.

I tried removing my floppy drive to see if it helps but it didn't.

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Re: PC shuts down randomly

Hello,

Please post the specs of the PC.

Motherboard-CPU-Memory-Graphics card-Power Supply brand/wattage

Has the inside of the PC been cleaned lately?

Boot into the BIOS and post the temps and voltage readings.

I have cleaned the PC from inside multiple times.

Where in BIOS do I find the temps and voltage readings ?

(I will post the specs in approx 10 hours since I don't have access to these atm)

Thanks in advance.

Re: PC shuts down randomly

Depending on the make/model of the motherboard you can usually find this info under PC Health Status or Hardware Monitor (or similar) in the BIOS.

Usually random shutdowns can be attributed to overheating component or failing power supply.

Re: PC shuts down randomly

Power supply model number: LC-B350ATX
It has a 230V and 115V switch, it's currently at 230V.

Motherboard: Intel D101GGC
Processor cooler: Intel c91968-002
Ram1: Samsung 256 MB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR
Ram2: Kingston 512MB KVR333X64C25/512 DDR

I will try to extract some more information if needed, but I need to set it up first.

I also wanted to point out that when the computer is on, the processor cooler/fan is working to the max, you could hear it loudly.
When the computer turns off (power light is still on but no loading light) I can't turn it back on unless I take out the power cord and re-connect it.

Hello,
Boot into the BIOS and go to Advanced > Hardware Monitoring and post the voltage and temp readings.

This sounds like there is a problem with the power supply or a bad motherboard.

Do you have another PSU you can use to test with. I would suggest doing this first

Closely inspect the motherboard for any damaged, bulging, or leaking capacitors.

Re: PC shuts down randomly

I had been thinking of upgrading the PC while keeping my old HDD drive (so I won't lose my files), however, will the following Power Supply fit with my specs ? (I am on low budget)

Corsair CX 430W
AMD FX-6100 6-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3, S-AM3+, REV.3.0
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9

Thanks for your help, I had some thoughts that the problem was with the Power Supply.

Re: PC shuts down randomly

Since I am on budget, I won't be buying one directly, but I was considering buying a SAPPHIRE RADEON HD7750 ULTIMATE 1GB PCI-E DVI/HDMI/DP SILENT

Re: PC shuts down randomly

These Power Supplies are a little over the budget (according to the prices in Sweden), how about OCZ CoreXStream 500W for the same price as the Corsair CX 430W

Re: PC shuts down randomly

Will you be purchasing from a shop or online retailer?

How much are you looking to spends on the upgrades.

Out of the two I would recommend sticking with the Corsair CX series just upping the wattage.

The main thing you want a PSU that will provide clean.stable power to your components.

Unfortunately this is not always accomplished with some of the lower priced unit because of build quality.

Re: PC shuts down randomly

I will be buying from a physical store since this is my cheapest yet best method.
Right now I wanna focus on the base products like motherboard, ram, processor, and PSU.

Even though the OCZ does not meet the same quality as the Crosair, it does seem like it does the job though, and it also comes with a 3 year warranty.

Here are some reviews I read about it: OCZ Technology 500W CoreXStream Series Power Supply (OCZ-CSX500W-UK) - dabs.com

I don't have enough to buy high-end brands while getting more or equal power.

Re: PC shuts down randomly

I just found this cheap PSU that is well-known brand: Antec VP550P 550W
Any ideas how well/good it is ? I've heard that the only bad thing is that they have short wires/cables

Edit: Found this one too for almost same price- Cooler Master B-series 500W PSU

Update: I just bought it and it's awesomely quiet, it's compatible with my old motherboard + hdd, so I guess won't be a problem when I upgrade my motherboard, cpu, and ram :D
