Hello everyone.

Ever since the afternoon yesterday i have been experiencing a strange connection problem.

When downloading any files from the internet, the download begins as normal, but after a few minutes, suddenly stops.
The same thing happens when trying to watch streamed videos (for example on Youtube) and when playing online games.

My actual internet connection does not cut out however, also only my computer has this problem, other computers connected to the same router work fine.
The problem only started yesterday and I have never had the same issue before. My software and hardware has not changed. Virus and Spyware checks show nothing.

Running:
OS: Windows XP, sp2.
Network Card: VIA VT6102 Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter.

Has anyone else had this problem before or does anyone have any suggestions of what i can do to fix it or even find out what is causing the problem?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

Try booting in safe mode with networking and see if downloads work normally. If they do, use MSCONFIG to remove startup items until you find the one that causes the issue. Remember that you need to reboot each time you change the configuration with MSCONFIG.

Safe mode appears to work, but that might just be dumb luck when i tried it.

Still doesn't work with startup items removed though.

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

I'd try putting enough mileage on downloads booted in safe mode to be sure that indeed is fixing it. I'd like to know that, because that will determine our next course of action.

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

Ok, just spent an hour downloading a 300MB file and it went the whole way no problem in safe mode.

Still doesn't work in normal mode with all startup programs removed though.

Time to start stopping processes in task manager and see if you can isolate it that way.

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

Ok, so i took a screen shot of the processes running in safe mode (as I'm assuming they are fine) and i went through them all.

I've eliminated all but one process and downloads are still halting up, but there is a problem with getting the last one...

Left = safe mode, right = normal.

There is an extra Svchost.exe, closing some of them causes the computer to shut down and when others are closed they just open themselves again.

Any ideas? heh...

Well, all of the SVCHOST instances appear to be running valid stuff. Try stopping other processes.

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

There isn't anything else to stop.. Closing any of the others causes a shutdown.

I'd like to avoid having to backup and reformat, but it's getting to the point where i have little other choice :S

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

If you've gone through all the processes and can't find it, I'm not sure what to tell you. Since it works in safe mode, it's something that's installed.

Let's do this another way.

Please post a HijackThis 2.00.2 Log here.

The only thing I can suggest is start uninstalling a few applications and see if you get lucky. :)

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

Well, in my case that could take several days, so i am going to buy an external HD, backup and reformat.

Thank you very much for the advise you have given and i apologize if i have been less than helpful in some of my replies (i get moody when my pc isn't working).

I will report back afterwards and let you know if it is fixed or not, but i do expect that a reformat and reinstall will fix it.

Talk to you soon :)

Re: Odd loss of connection problem.

Reformatted and i'm downloading all my Video and Audio drivers and such. Downloads all working fine.

Shame we never got to the actual source of the problem, but with things working i am happy.

Thanks once again for all the help you gave me.

* hugs *

Too bad it was the hard way, but sometimes that's the path of least resistance.
