I have never seen this behavior before:

XP installed with no toolbar with the desktop icon and notepad in it.

How would I find this? I have no clue as to where the desktop shortcut is even stored.:4-dontkno

Re: No tool bar in new install

Are you refering to the small set of icons next to the start bar?
If so right click the taskbar and click to unlock it.
Then right click again and go to toolbars and select quick launch.
Then you can drag any icons that you want to it.
When finished relock it.

Re: No tool bar in new install

This is a fresh install so I don't know how or if it is locked. Still, I don't know how you make a shortcut to the desktop.

I will look and report back.

Thanks for answering.

Re: No tool bar in new install

Right click on the desktop and select New> Shortcut
Hah!

Way interersting. When you do this and ask for a shortcut the dialog box asks where will the shortcut be. Browse to the desktop (usually at top) and select that. The icon automatically changes to the familiar "desktop" item in the tray.

I will try this soonest on the problem machine and report back. Just thinking about this I wonder if the magic bar separators will appear when I drag and drop?

[solved] Re: No tool bar in new install

wrench,

I did what you said. The task bar was locked so I unmarked that. After making the desktop shortcut from above post, I dragged it down to the bottom left (Quick Launch if you will) and the Quick Launch divider was established. It looks like it should now-- until the next time I muck it up which all too easy.

Well, not out of the woods yet with this setup.

The XP drive on which we solved this problem I cloned to a larger drive.
It won't boot and so I have made a new inquiry over in the hard drive section.

Thanks, wrench for your help. It will be in my personal reference group at techsupportforum.
