ok....
i have read other threads that talks about this but i still don't get how to fix "MY" computer....

so... my computer worked fine....

and then. one day... my monitor suddenly doesn't turn on for some reason..
well.. my monitor works cause i tried it on other computer that i have..
but my monitor is still in standby mode... (it seems it doesn't know that computer is on... it doesn't have "no signal" thingy floating around.. so i know that it is not the cable that I'm having trouble with..)

hmm.. so.. i will tell you in detail what happens when i turn my computer on..


so.. if i plug in the plug..
the LED light on the back turns on
when i press start button, LED light in the front comes on..
for some reason.. my both cd drives are down.. there is no light and i can't open it...
CPU cooling fan and power supply's fan spins fine...


any ideas??
btw... i don't have graphic card. My "thing" where u plug VGA thingy (please tell me what you call it) is on the motherboard... please help!! thanks so much

From your discription I would suggest first try another monitor if you have not already but Im guessing it also will not work.

I believe your motherboard is not putting out any signal and that is why your monitor is not coming on. Probably because of a power supply problem or mother board problem..

From you reference to "thing" above Im guesing that repairing it yourself is beyond your technical ability so you will need to take it to someone to repair. If it is under warranty then take it to the supplier.

Otherwise if you are up to it you could check the voltages from the Power supply and or replace it and check all mother board connections.

well.. it's my dad's office computer.. so.. i don't really know the video card cpu ram but.. i will try to list what i can...

(uh.. = is something like - and ... this kind of thing right below..)

Brand = COMPAQ...

see if can borrow another psu larger wattage to try in it it sounds like your 12v line has dropped enough to cause the problem

uh.. how do i do this checking when i can't see anything???

from what you posted your current supply only has 14a on the 12v line

for agp you need a min output of 18a or better

Lykfe,

Bottom line is you probably have a faulty Power supply. Big question is are you capable of replacing it.

If this Compaq pc is standard and you have not added anything to it then the power supply is just faulty. If you added hardware to your dads old Compaq then you need to upgrade the power supply.

The original on is a HP / compaq part is a 250 Watt Power supply see here:

If you need one with more power you will have to get a power supply with the same connections and mounting but more power output 500 wats or more. Take the faulty one to a compter parts shop and show them the old one. They may even test it for you.

No guarantee replaceing the power supply will fix it but thats the best guess so far.

but before plugging in put the main power plugs for the m/b alongside one anothe and make sure the same coloured wires go to the same pins

ok... i found out that it was not the power supply that it was broken..
i tried other power supply it doesn't work and that power supply works fine...
i tried it with other computers...

i found out that it was the motherboard that was the prob...
i changed the motherboard and now it works 100% fine thanks so much to all who helped me
