hello. i am a student in the uk and we have a 24mbps broadband at home with the company Be. Well it's not actually 24mbps, it only get up to 13-14mbps as we can see from the modem/router's page (i.e at 192.168.etc).

The problem that i am facing is that my laptop, as opposed to my two other housemates' laptops, does not get that high speeds. When I run a test at speedtest.net (and other websites, as well) I only get around 2-3mbps, while my housemates get around 10+mbps on the test. We have a wireless network at home (from the BeBox - not an additional router), my room is upstairs (not more than 2 metres from the modem) and one of my housemates is even further away than I am. However, I still can't get high speeds. I've tried connecting my laptop directly to the modem using an ethernet wire, and still I only got around 3-4mbps.

My laptop is an HP Compaq 8510p, 2.2GHz Intel Core-duo processor, 3GBs of RAM. Intel(R) Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN, Intel(R) 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (Ethernet). I have Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3. I have the option 'windows to configure wireless network settings', and not any other Intel program or something.

I have no idea of what to do. I tried disabling the windows firewall, no luck. I can't think of anything that could be limiting the speeds that I can get. Probably it is something to do with any advanced settings that I am not aware of..?

PLEASE HELP!!

P.S. Minor (?:) detail: my housemates both have MACs:p
