Over the past month I have been experiencing various BSODs ranging from when I turn on the laptop, to completely random ones. I have noticed that once the laptop is up and running, it seems a lot more stable and will be fine for days (if I hibernate it rather than turning off).
Some (but not all) of these BSODs say "Driver IRQL not less or equal", others say "IRQL not less or equal" and others have "ataport.sys" as a problem.

About a month ago (when the BSODs started) I had a problem with my graphics cards drivers (one graphics card wasn't being detected), but contacted the laptop manufacturer who helped resolve the problem. Since then I have still been experiencing BSODs.

I have run a CHKDSK which showed no errors, and an SFC was also fine.
I have been unable to install Windows 7 SP1 as when trying to install, the error 'FFFFFFE' always shows.

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80GHz
Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce 9100M G & NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M

Power Supply: AC adaptor which came with the laptop - Delta Electronics Ltd. Wattage not shown.

Thank you for the help - I follow the steps above (removed AVG and daemon tools) and I experienced no BSODs for a day or two. Since then, I have had about a dozen more BSODs (mainly when booting the laptop, or bringing it out of hibernation). On some of the BSODs, it says 'ataport.sys' in the problem. It seems to me that once my laptop is 'stable' (everything booted up), it doesn't BSOD.

Hello.

SPTD (the harmful part of Daemon Tools) still remains and appears to be the root cause of some of the BSODs. SPTD functions as a virtual CD/DVD drive through ataport.sys, so that isn't surprising. Remove SPTD completely with this utility: DuplexSecure - Downloads

You'll also want to install SP1. Do so via Windows Update or here: Download details: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)

As I was installing this, I blue-screened with the message 'page fault in unpaged area' but I rebooted and have since successfully installed it. No BSODs since, but will post here again if there are any.

Just had another BSOD stating 'Driver IRQL not less or equal' with 'ataport.sys'. To be clear - when I download and run the .exe from DuplexSecure, do I 'update' or 'uninstall' SPTD?

I have uninstalled SPTD successfully and thought the blue-screens had stopped, as it was fine for a day or two. Today, however, I have experienced many BSODS, with either no message, 'IRQL not less or equal' and twice 'Driver IRQL not less or equal' with 'ataport.sys' mentioned again. These two occurred when I was trying to run the 'Windows7_Vista_jcgriff2' program in order to upload another report to here.
Luckily, it completed on the third attempt so I have attached the report again.
I have checked the SPTD and it is still uninstalled, so am not sure why the 'ataport.sys' is still appearing on some blue-screens.

NB: This may be completely unrelated, but I am also experiencing browser redirects when using google, and sometimes random pages are loaded in firefox in a new tab (without me doing anything). I have run virus/spyware/malware checks which all came back clean. If I remember correctly, these browser redirects started at around a similar time as the BSODs.

You may have a possible rootkit virus. It's common to see ataport.sys in your BSOD when your infected. The re-directs are also a sign.

Run the tool and report back the results

I ran the tool, which found 1 rootkit virus. I rebooted my laptop as the tool said to do, and ran another rootkit check after rebooting which found nothing.

Currently looking good - no browser/google redirects and no blue screens so far. Will post if this changes.

So far so good - no browser redirects and no BSODs since I removed the rootkit. I have also managed to install Windows 7 SP1 successfully (which I was unable to do before). I have rebooted several times since last night without BSODs (which was when they were more likely to happen).
