[SOLVED] Movie Maker Miseries

941 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  likekinds
When I 'publish' a video in Windows Movie Maker; the file is saved in .wmv format. If I return the file to WMM for additional editing; I have real problems. When I first return the file; it will open and play from beginning to end. Once I split the clip to insert additional media, or to make changes to just a portion of the clip, problems start. After splitting the clip. I can do no more with the file. It will not play; it will not do anything. If I remove and re import the file; it will play again . As soon as I split the file, the problems start again. I have Vista Home Premium amd Windows Movie Maker 6. I've had this problem since I first bought the computer. Three years of searching for a solution, and I still haven't found one. I've lost many hours of work because of this issue. If anyone can offer any help; it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Movie Maker Miseries

Not sure what you are saying when you say you return the file to wmm. But I'll tell you what I do when I export to a .wmv or even an .avi file.

If I want to make changes to the exported file, I take the exported file, and load as a new .wmv video file. Then I make the changes and export to a different file. If thats what you are doing, there is no reason why it shouldn't work.

If you are reloading the original WMM file, and editing, there is no reason why it won't work, unless you have deleted the original input file or files.

If you are taking the .wmv file and renaming it to .wmm, then that's what your problem is and it won't work. A .wmm file has pointers and flags that it uses to refer to the original input video file.

You are correct. It should work, but it doesn't work for me.

My apologies. I am so frustrated, that the information I gave you was incorrect. I'll try again. When I publish a video in Windows Moviemaker, the resulting file is in .wmv format. I can play this .wmv file it in most any player. I can even upload it to YouTube. However, if I returned this same .wmv file to Windows Moviemaker for any an additional changes I might want to make; I run into all of the above mentioned problems. I don't understand why Windows Moviemaker has problems handling a file that it created. I have found instances on the Internet, where other people are having the same problem. I have not found how any one has resolved this issue. I don't rename the file. As a last resort; I have been converting these old .wmv files to .avi format, so I can continue re editing them in Windows Moviemaker. I think it's strange that Windows Moviemaker can handle a .avi file for re editing, better than it's own .wmv files.

Any more help you might have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: Movie Maker Miseries

Sorry, I didn't undertand what you meant. Maybe you can find some answers here.

I only used movie maker once since I only had Vista for a short while. When I had XP, I used a different program, and I did with it what I mentioned. Now I have Windows 7 and it doesn't have movie maker anymore. It has something else from live essentials and another program that I haven't tried yet.
Re: Movie Maker Miseries

Thanks. I'll give WMM Forum a try. I've been reading quite a bit from the site. My problem may be .ax filter related. I'll keep reading and hope for the best. Thanks again for your help.
