[SOLVED] Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

3749 Views 22 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  TheCyberMan
The jist of the problem is as follows: Every now and then, my keyboard and mouse (USB) will both stop responding (my cursor just hangs there and I cannot control anything with the keyboard). The only remedy seems to be a hard reboot, holding the power button down. It can happen anywhere from once a week to ten times a day (I'm keeping a tally here, and it's at 11 as I'm typing this, with 33 total last week). Sometimes I'll hear the USB connection sound as it happens, sometimes I won't. I'd really appreciate help on the matter. It's been going on for perhaps a month now.

Information:
-In event viewer, it seems as though events 702, 7023 and 7001 appear just prior to the "crash."
-System specs can be seen in attached .txt file.

Some of the things I've tried, amongst many others:
-Waiting a few hours for responsiveness to return (it doesn't)
-Updating drivers and BIOS
-Running a clean restart
-Plugging keyboard and mouse into different ports
-Allocating more power to both
-Again, several other "solutions"

If you have anything, anything at all to suggest, feel free. Thanks for reading.

Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

When you plugged the keyboard or mouse into different ports, did you try plugging the mouse directly into the computer rather than a hub?
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Yes, I did. On a side note, my tally has reached 16, and that's all in one day.

(Oh, and sorry for the duplicate account, but I was having technical difficulties logging into this one again until I tried actually typing out the emailed password rather than pasting... though I was typing out my manually created password beforehand, which I certainly didn't forget or mistake, so that's still odd.)
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Is your printer networked?
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Yes, I believe so. I've been having problems printing with it lately; not sure if that's related in any way.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Please await an answer. I've referred the problem to our Networking staff since I believe that's where the problem arrises.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

1. Please try and connect your keyboard and mouse to another computer please to reproduce the issues you are having.

2. Please update the chipset drivers by downloading the latest ones from the computer manufacturer's website or motherboard manufacturer's website if a custom build.

3. The printer is it connected via the USB port or is it wired to the ethernet port or a wireless connected printer?
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

1. I'll use them with my laptop for a few hours and let you know if it crashed later.

2. I just updated these (after you posted, I mean).

3. It's wired to the ethernet port.

Thanks for your help thus far.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

On the Laptop ensure in your bios that USB lagacy devices is enabled if you have that option.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

On my desktop I've been getting crashes or at least hiccups every half hour or so. Nothing so far on the laptop. Yes, legacy was enabled. I think it's safe to assume that the problem does not specifically lie with the mouse and keyboard.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Please update your chipset drivers as advised and also your network card drivers both ethernet and wiresless card drivers.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Done.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Still isn't working, though.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Please open a cm dprompt by right clicking and choosing run as administrator and type:

sfc /scannow press enter

let it repair anything it finds and restart if prompted to do so.

From a cmd pormpt please type chkdsk /r and press enter to schedule a scandisk upon re-boot this can take time please be patient.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Just finished the scandisk and I'm still getting crashes. :banghead:
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Did you perform both functions in Post #14? When you say crash, do you mean freeze or a black or blue screen? Does 3 finger "salute" work and can you end the process thereby?
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

-Yes, I did what 14 said.
-I meant freezes, but I refer to them as crashes anyway due to their terminal nature.
-No, not a single key will do anything.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

If you're familiar with checking your computer's heat do it and post back. Particularly CPU heat. If not, see if this helps: How to check CPU temperature:A complete guide to Check CPU temperature through BIOS or software on all operating system
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

Have you checked the temperatures as Corday advised?

How much RAM memory do you have installed and is windows 7 64bit(x64) or 32-bit(x86) you can check this by going to start>control panel>system and it will display whether it is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Re: Mouse and keyboard stop responding at random intervals

I think I may have worked it out. In device manager, a hidden device under keyboards was appearing as 'unknown' or something to that effect. I deleted it along with my actual keyboard, unplugged it and plugged it back in, reinstalling the associated drivers. I also defragged my drive and ran a few random system tuneups. Not a single hiccup or freeze observed as of yet. I'd like to thank the both of you for your time and efforts. It's nice to use my computer for an hour without having to reboot. Thanks again.

If anyone with a similar issue happens to navigate here, I would additionally recommend the program 'TuneUp Services 2013' (the demo version). It contains a host of performance boosting services that you may find useful.
