[SOLVED] Missing Network?

710 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  IndoMK
Earlier today, I moved from the house my family's been living in, to an apartment we've lived in before (had to vacate for a couple months). When I tried to get online here (I'd been on before), the wireless network didn't show up as being within range - even though I'm sitting right next to it. (Other networks within range do show up though.) It isn't appearing for my mom either (Windows XP Professional). My dad is able to connect with both his Windows XP laptop, as well as his Windows7 laptop (my sister - with a Win7 netbook is also connecting just fine). I'm running Windows XP Home Edition (Media Center), with Service Pack 2. We've reset the router to default (and then reconfigured), I've uninstalled/reinstalled my wireless driver... I don't have a clue what happened between this morning and this afternoon. :4-dontkno I didn't change *anything* on my computer. Oh, but wiring in works - I'm writing this using the LAN cable.

Re: Missing Network?

Hello,

Try to manually add your wireless network (SSID) in your XP computer, here's a guide.
Re: Missing Network?

The guide doesn't say anything about WPA encryption, which is what our wireless uses. Does adding it that way void the necessity for a network key?
Re: Missing Network?

Sorry about that, use the same link that I have provided you and in the drop down menu locate WPA, you won't miss it and type in your encryption key.
Re: Missing Network?

Well, it didn't work. It created the connection fine, but it didn't connect, and the network still does not show up as within range.
Re: Missing Network?

From your wireless computer pls. run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Here's a more detail guide => Double click on the xirrus icon on your desktop of if you have one running in a corner, just click on it. Tap the Printscreen key on your keyboard, open up Paint then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then SAVE it. Upload and attached it here, click on Go Advanced and locate Manage Attachments Tab and attached the file.

Also, for now please disable any Firewall/Security Software in your computer.

Re: Missing Network?

Try channel 1 on the router, it seems to be the best choice from that display.
Re: Missing Network?

Changing the channel on the router involves connecting it to the computer, and accessing advanced options, correct?
Re: Missing Network?

You connect to the router using a wired connection and access the wireless configuration pages of the router.
Re: Missing Network?

Well... problem is solved. I was looking around on my computer's network options, and decided to disable the windows wireless manager and try using the one for my card. It didn't magically reveal the network, as I was kinda hoping it would - but I did notice that all the networks listed had a little 'g' by the network strength indicator. That made me curious, so I checked one of the network's properties, and it said it was an 802.11g (whatever). So then I checked what the connection properties were on the Win7 computer I was currently using, and it said the "Radio Type" was 802.11n. I had no clue what the difference was, so I asked a friend I was chatting with... and, well, to make a long story short, evidently my network card/driver (whichever) doesn't appear to support 'n' (still don't know precisely what that is), so I changed the router off of "802.11 Mixed (n/g/b)" to "802.11 Mixed (g/b)", went back to my computer, and the network had appeared! So I then deleted the manually created connection off my computer, and let it create its own connection... and it worked! :) I'm still not entirely sure what I did... but I'm extremely happy to have my internet working again. Could someone explain what I did? I'd like to understand it, at least sort of...
