I've had this problem since I first bought my computer and tried connecting to the internet. I've only been able to connect to the internet when I took an ethernet card out of a different computer in my network and put it into my own. The cable was turned off after forgetting to pay it. When it was paid for my computer had a, "limited or no connectivity" message. I took the ethernet card out of a different computer and it worked for a day. The other computer was not working after I had done that. This morning my dad had taken it to his friend's house (I would do that, too, if I wasn't broke) who has knowledge about computers, brought it back, and plugged it into the router. My computer is back with a, "limited or no connectivity" message.

I have tried four different ethernet cards and one other cable, no luck.

Help would be greatly appreciated. B)

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

Has any computer successfully connected to the modem since it was turned back on? Maybe the service isn't really available.

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

The 'source' computer is the only one that will connect. I noticed that when I tried plugging one of my ethernet cables into the router, the other computer would disconnect until I unplugged it.

None of it really makes sense to me.

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

Let's see this from a working computer connected to that router.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

Mystery resolved.

If this is indeed a connection to the router, you have the modem connected to one of the LAN/Network ports. It should be connected to the WAN/Internet port.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

  • Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
  • Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
  • Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
  • Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
  • Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
  • Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

I did what you told me to. When I rebooted this computer it wouldn't connect to the internet. It had a, "limited or no connectivity" message. However, my computer connected to the internet. I did it once more and it's the same as it was before. The modem has always been connected to the uplink port.

This is what the command prompt said when the internet was disconnected.

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

What is the make/model of this router? There is no evidence of a router here. Did you reset it to factory defaults and try that way?

Re: Limited or no connectivity.

That's not a router, that's a network hub! You need a broadband router that will allow you to share the single public IP address.
