[SOLVED] Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

18203 Views 13 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  2xg
As of yesterday, I have been unable to go to certain websites (facebook, hotmail, msn, windows update) using Internet Explorer 8. I can go to yahoo and google.

I am connected to a wireless router through an ethernet cable.

I've tried unchecking all the boxes under LAN settings and many other tips I found online. Nothing worked.

I scanned my system with malwarebytes and nothing was found. I have Norton Internet Security 2009 and I disabled the firewall to see if that was blocking it. That also did not help

I did a network diagnostic scan and this is what I got.

Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Try enabling compatibility mode. It is the broken page icon next to the refresh button on the toolbar. Here’s a good resource from the IEBlog that talks about compatibility mode in detail if you’d like to learn more: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/02/16/just-the-facts-recap-of-compatibility-view.aspx

If that doesn’t work, run IE in No Add-ons Mode. Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) - If this fixes the issue, then go to Tools -> Manage Add-ons and enable the add-ons one by one to find which one was causing the problem.

You can also try resetting Internet Explorer's settings by going to Tools > Internet Options and then the "Advanced" tab, and click "Reset..."

If you’re still not having any luck, I recommend you reinstall IE8 on your system.

I hope this solves your issue!

Cheers,

Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Bryn,

Thanks for trying to help.

I tried enabling compatibility mode and that didn't help.

I ran Internet Explorer in No-Add ons mode and still the same results.

I reset Internet Explorer's settings and nothing.

I then reinstalled IE8 and I couldn't even get to this site until I ran WinSockFix.

Still having the same problems now. Got any other ideas?

Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Hello and Welcome to TSF!

Please restart your computer Tap F8 and select Safe Mode with Networking. In here, see if you're able to open IE and browse.

Try resetting the Hosts File also.

Another thing....Click on Start => run and type the word cmd and press enter. From the black screen command prompt, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen choose Select All and Paste the results here.

Please post update.

Thanks for replying 2xgrump,

Same results when running in safe mode with networking.

I can't view the link for resetting hosts file. It comes up as page cannot be displayed.

Here is what I get from ipconfig /all

Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

You do have a good working IP, something else is blocking your connection. Disable any Firewalls or Security Software that you have for now.

Please try a different browser, for ex. Chrome or Firefox and see if you're getting the same results.

Also verify if you have any Proxy settings, remove it if you do, here's a guide.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

I can't get anywhere with Chrome and I'm unable to download Firefox. I'm going to uninstall Norton and then reinstall it and see if that helps. For some reason I can't disable the firewall right now.

I don't have any proxy settings.

Thanks.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Now that you've mentiones about Norton, that might be the culprit. Please use this Norton Removal Tool, try downloading it from another computer and store it in a USB external device.
I'm going to uninstall Norton and then reinstall it and see if that helps.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

I removed Norton Internet Security and still can't get to a lot of websites. I can't even get to the Norton download page to reinstall Norton. Do you have any other ideas?
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Please reset the TCP/IP by following this guide:
To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:
cmd
At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Then, reset Winsock also by typing in this command: netsh winsock reset catalog press enter after then Reboot your computer.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Ok I did all that and still the same results. I still can't go to hotmail, facebook, symantec, and many other websites.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Click on Start then Run, type %systemroot% \system32\drivers\etc, and then click OK. You can also open up the My Computer Icon and browse to the location.

Please copy and paste your Hosts File here.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

We finally figured it out. We had to reset our router and now everything seems to work. Thanks for the help. I'll be back if something else pops up.
Re: Internet Explorer 8 - page cannot be displayed

Alright, that's good to hear.
