OK, I looked and looked, couldn't find this question or answers: I've got a WD 120G eide hdd, am installing a (new)WD1600YS (SATA) It's supported by my motherboard. I want to use the new hd as my boot drive, reformat the old drive (after successful install) and use it to backup/store data. I plan to :
#1- install new drive, and format it.
#2- Insert Win XP disc, turn off computer, disconnect old drive.
#3- Boot up, install Win xp on new drive
#4- Turn off, reconnect old drive, transfer data/programs to new drive
#5- If everything works on new drive and everything transfers OK, reformat old drive.

Am I correct with this? Any tips, corrections very much appreciated!

Well G'day mate and much thanks! I've got a friend in southwest Australia, Harry, a school principal. As soon as I get the hard drive I'll try your advice.

Re: Installing second hard drive

Solved! Spent 3 hours trying to install the WD drive (from Newegg), 2 hours with tech support (1 hour on hold) They told me I had a defective drive. Went to Staples, got a Maxtor 320G for about the same price, 5 minutes later it was up and running! Now it's gonna cost $15 or so to send the drive back? I'm calling Newegg this AM.

Got a WD in there now, that's why I chose them, plus a 160G w/16MB cache sounded good. All's well, got a 320 w/16MB for about the same $
