Do all versions of Vista have Indexing Options? I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1 (build 6001) and someone suggested to me that since I am so very unorganized, especially my computer files, that I should run the Indexing Options and let my files be automatically indexed and it would speed up Vista. I have not been able to find the Index Options. Do I have it on Vista Home P.

Re: Indexing Options

Hey sluggo123

The index option is in your Local Disk (C:) options

1. Select Start and select Computer

2. Right click Local Disk(C:) and select Properties

3. Check the Index This Drive For Faster Searching box

4. Check the Compress This Drive ToSsave Disk Space box

5. Select Ok and then select Apply To Sub Folders

This will now compress all your system and user folders however this does not mean that it will speed up your system. I do not use these options at all and my system is fast. To Index your system puts more process's onto the cache memory.

Re: Indexing Options

I got it, ran it and it seems to be faster, but then I got another input from my local guru who said no, just disable your indexing and everything will run faster. What do you guys think?

Re: Indexing Options

Disable the indexing, however what i would also advise is utilise the disk performance settings

1. Click Start, type Device Manager and select Device Manager from the results and press enter.

2. Under Disk Drives select your local drive.

3. Right click and select Properties and then select the Policies tab.

4. Select Optimize For Performance and uncheck Enable Write Caching On Disk and select Ok

This will stop the disk writting constantly and you should see a significant enhancement after your next reboot

Re: Indexing Options

Sluggo123,
It really depends on what you want to happen faster, system operation or search results. The indexing service running will allow search results to show faster as the system is constantly updating file index information. Now the transverse of that would be that the system is spending some time and resources keeping that index up to date and it may slow the system down. If you have a system that is designed with Vista in mind you will most likely not notice a substantial increase in performance when shutting off the index service.
If you are truly disorganized and survive by using the search feature in Windows to find files and such, then I would recommend leaving the service running.

I will try both ways and see which one I like better. Thanks to all of you, this is an excellent tech help forum.
