[SOLVED] IE9 PROBLEMS

27993 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Sleuth77
I recently downloaded Internet Explorer 9 as part of an essential Windows Update. So far, this was a big mistake as nothing has worked right since. I have some programs that won't run from the desktop icons and Internet Explorer doesn't work properly. Nothing happens when I try to bring up the items that are listed on its start page. When I try to use Bing as a search engine, all I get is about:blank. It opens to a blank page whatever I enter into the search window. I can go to Google and it works fine.
I am Running Windows 7 Professional on a Dell Studio XPS 9000. The video card is a Nvidia GTS 240.
I have had to reinstall some programs to make them work. I uninstalled IE9 and went back to IE8 but it is now doing the same. I have gone back to IE9 to see if I can figure all this out.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: IE9 PROBLEMS

May not be IE9's fault at all but some other automatic update that was installed on the same day. I know of no-one who has had the problems you've described with IE9, including myself, but I installed it manually because I never allow automatic updates (too many opportunities for Windows to get screwed up).

See if System Restore can take you back far enough to correct the issues you are currently having, then disable automatic updates unless you want to keep going round in circles fixing the same problems. You can always visit Windows Update at your convenience to see what's available & have full control over what get's installed.

Half way between disabling auto updates and allowing them is getting notified and making the download and install the users decision. One advantage is;no surprise restarts.

On the other hand, you will be surprised how many people with computers out there can't be stuffed even doing this, and being out of date for over a year.
Re: IE9 PROBLEMS

Here is an update on my Internet Explorer problems. I did a right click on the Internet Explorer desktop icon and selected run as administrator. This helped considerably as the links now work. The Bing search window still does not work from the initial location. There are some sites that will not open in my Windows Live 2011 email program. They always worked before the update but now they come up blank. I believe there is something about this program that is trying to protect my program.
I may use the system restore if it doesn't improve.

Thanks for everyone's assistance.
Re: IE9 PROBLEMS

There is one other thing I forgot to mention. Before I can open Iternet Explorer 9, a pop up window opens with the message, "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" It is referring to the program IE9.
Re: IE9 PROBLEMS

I attempted to use system restore and it would not work. It gave me a message stating that there was an Error in Volume Shadow Copy Service. It further suggested trying a system recovery. That would take me all the way back to Oct 17, 2010. That would be a last resort.
Re: IE9 PROBLEMS

Right click on the IE Shortcut click on Properties => Advanced => Tick the box Run as administrator click Ok
Re: IE9 PROBLEMS

Just to clarify the situation, here is what caused the problems with IE9 and other programs. I purchased Revo Uninstaller Pro and it has a program in it to find and clean up junk files. After doing this, I started having problems with several programs such as Roxio CinePlayer, HP Solution Center and Internet Explorer 9. Some programs weren't affected but others were in a mess.
I have since reinstalled Windows 7 Professional and IE 9 works as it should. You never know what will happen when you delete your temp files. Some programs require them to operate properly. So, be careful when cleaning up your computer.
