Have a very peculiar problem: running IE 8 on XP, go to Yahoo main home page, click on a news link and the page starts to load, then it freezes trying to load the next component on the page. At that point I must close the browser since it goes to non-responding state.
The Task Manager shows 2 instances of IE which I thought is strange since only 1 IE instance is open.
Other non-Yahoo sites such as msn, etc. work fine.
All of the same sites work fine in Firefox browser.
Also noticed the Yahoo Finance pages load ok...it seems that their sidebars are different than the others so that could have something to do with it.
What I have tried:
Microsoft Fix it tool will not run - gives error message
Uninstalled and reinstalled IE8 and Adobe Flash player
Cleared browser history, cookies, cache, cleared SSL cache
Manually deleted all cookies
Reset settings in Internet Explorer options
Disabled all add-ons, toolbars
Ran in safe mode
Defragmented HD
Ran with memory settings in performance mode
Increased Temp Internet file size higher than recommended 50MB
Disabled/renenabled '3rd party extensions' option
Ran full virus scan - is clean
Cleared out all files from Flash player
Ran disk cleanup
Ran with Compatibility mode on and off

But the problem still persists. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

Two IEs in Task Manager not a problem, disregard. Increasing Temp would only make matters worse. Return to default but use CCleaner to delete all temp files. Block ads. They cause the freeze in most cases on Yahoo. What message are you getting when trying to use Fixit?

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

Ran CCleaner, but issue still persists after cleaning. Pop-ups are blocked. Temp folder size is set to recommended 50MB.
Microsoft fix-it error is: ' Troubleshooting cannot continue because an error has occurred. The program encountered an error trying to contact the server. Please try later. [Code 80072F8F] ' - this error happens every time I run it.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

I have run windows updater and IE looks to have all the latest security fixes. This is an XP PC. Also does Adobe Shockwave player and/or Flash ActiveX need to be installed? All that is installed is Flash player 11.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

Ran the suggestions at the given Microsoft link but Fix it will still not run. One note - running regsvr32 mshtml.dll gives the following message: ' mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered.'

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

This HTML could be the missing key to the IE problem. Try unregistering first, then re-registering mshtml.dll
If nothing, Run sfc /scannow

Run in the Command Prompt> regsvr32 /u mshtml.dll

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

Ran the deregister mshtml.dll and it did nothing. Ran the SFC scan - it completed 100% but gave no messages at all when it was done. The problem still exists. Narrowing it down, IE is freezing when it is trying to load the images on the right side of the page; some do load, but when it gets to certain ones it halts the browser....the status bar shows waiting for.....and stops responding.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

I ran the re-register on mshtml.dll but it gave the same error....however I don't think this dll applies to IE8 as I tried it on another pc that doesn't have this problem and got the same message, so I think this entry point thing can be ruled out.
There was no CBS.log file created. There was a sfcdetails.txt file but it had nothing in it.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

Is Java script enabled? Many pages hang for a while until "Stop Script" is selected. This can take quite a long time on XP. Try disabling Java Script: IE>Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom Level>You're in Internet Zone, scroll down to Scripting>Active Scripting, Disable. If you prefer you could also change it to Prompt.

Disabling active scripting seems to do the trick...thanks much!! Will this being disabled cause any problems?

Absolutely. You will find certain functions in certain sites undo-able. Just re- enable for those functions. Since you mentioned Yahoo, an example would be when sending an Email from your Yahoo account, you'd have to enable Java Script to insert an address from your Yahoo Address Book.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

How do you check if Java is enabled? Java 7 update7 is showing in the add/remove programs and a Java icon is appearing in my system tray saying there is an update available.
The problem is going to other websites, many dropdown menus are not displaying with active scripting disabled. [with it set to prompt, too many pop ups come up to navigate without going nuts].

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

Java Scripting is not the Java7 you're referring to. That's Java JRE. You should update for safety. My solution isn't a real answer to the problem. Just a workaround. It's a lot easier to turn on and off (takes about 5 seconds)in Firfeox.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

I assume all is OK on your Vista, IE9 unit. Is the XP one up to date with all MS Updates? Your solutions in Post #1 are all the usual remedies. Might try with AV turned off, but I can't see why FF would work and not IE. Put Yahoo in your Trusted sites and lower Security for them.

Re: IE 8 hangs in certain Yahoo sites

I lowered the Security from medium to low-medium and it appears to work now with Active scripting enabled!! Thanks much!!
