If you have the OS CD try to boot using it. Can you briefly describe your previous problem? I didn't see the thread.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Hi
Before I was getting a few different errors when I booted up and a message popped up saying I had a dirty HD so I ran CHKDSK from CMD and it confirmed that and set CHKDSK to run at startup because it was in read only mode but nothing happened. So I restarted and got the same errors and the icon popped up again saying dirty HD. So I ran a virus scan and nothing was found. Then I restarted and reset BIOS settings and tried to boot into safemode but it would not load past varius points when I tried a few times. So then I wen't onto BIOS put the cd load first and on the PC i am on now I downloaded the recovery console ISO. I then loaded that and everything was fine until it said starting windows it then froze and gave me a blue screen error and restarted. I can load ISO images so if you know something that would scan for errors or missing files that would be usefull.

Oh... and I don't really wan't to loose data, it would cost a fortune to re-install everything, I only have a 10G download limit per month.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

You can use a Ubuntu Live CD to boot off of and backup your data to a flash drive or other USB device. Or you can pull the HDD out of the computer and put it on a USB Adapter, attach it to a working computer and backup all your data. once your data is backed up.
Boot off of the XP CD and get to the Recovery Console, here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any errors. You can also download the ISO IMage fro Seatools for Dos burn the image with IMGBurn and boot off of the newly created CD and run the HDD Diagnostics.

How far through safe mode did it get? When you see the sequence of white text and black background which line does it stop at? does it even get that far?
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

It will not even start loading safe mode.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

I'm now on my Net book at last :D. I am on Ubunto though :S, just wondering what is the best way to backup with Ubunto?
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Ubuntu Live CD walks you through it. You will need a USB device to backup to, like a flash drive.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

I backed up and put in my windows cd but as the instalation started I got an "unexpected error" saying something i'll post the error soon.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

The error code is "One of the services disk part uses returned a failiure. Error code=3. the system cannot find the path specified". What does that mean? oh... and I installed Ubunto and set it to use a partition in my drive bu it seems to have taken up the whole thing, what can I do to fix this?
Hello, just been reading all replies, there is another option. If you can easily get hold of another basic hardrive with an OS on it, doesn't need to be big. Switch it with master hardrive and set the faulty one as a slave driver. Then load up the system, go my computer, and try to access the old hardrive to back up your files. Then format it, set it as master, and reinstall OS.

I've had the same issue on an old emachines system. This worked, with a spare 20gb harddrive.

Just an option, hope you sort out your problem.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Hello Cloak,

This is the step by step you asked me for;

1) With power off, open the computer case.

2) You'll see where your master hard drive is located, this will have a 40 pin grey cable connected to it. With Master written on it, it shall have a second connector further down the cable with Slave written upon it.

3) The Hard drive will be sitting in a chassis bay, more then likely it will have 2 slots in it to hold 2 hard drives or more, put the current hard drive on the bottom bay, and connect the Slave connection to it. Usually the slave connector is grey, and the master is black.

4) Put the spare hard drive you said if you have in the bay above the original hard drive, and connect the Master to it.

5) You'll also notice a 4 pin PSU cable connected to the hard drive, it should have a second branched on the same cable, connect one to the master and the second to the slave.

6) Now you need to change the Jumper settings on the back of the hard drives, both hard drives should have a label on them with jumper settings information. Looking a little something like this;

: : : : Slave
/ : : : Master or Single Drive
: : : / Limit capacity to X gb.

The vast majority of hard drives require the Jumper to be removed for it to act as the slave.

7) Then set the new hard drives Jumper settings to Master.

If your comfortable with what you have done, make sure all connections are secure, and the hard drives are safely in place, then close up the case.

8) Restart your machine.

I hope that was clear for you, if not please let me know. Also remeber to read the hard drive labels for exact jumper settings, although most hard drives require the jumper removed for it to act as a slave driver, the master settings differ often.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Thanks for that I will try it ASAP and let you know. I also think I may have found why the installation for windows failed. I was trying to use the vista installation disk and it said I could not install because the hard disk partitions were not NTFS like they should be, could this be Ubunto? Could I change the drive to NTFS somehow?
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

I dont know about Ubunto, id suggest asking other users on that matter, but once youve set the hard drive as a slave, and youve laoded up the sysetm, you cna go to my computer, select the faulty hard drive, back up all files from it you need, then you can format it. Set it as master again and run the installation disk.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Hi unless you tried to install ubuntu rather than running the live cd there should be no issue with it
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

I did install ubunto though to try and get a duel boot but GRUB won't give me an option to run windows.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Hey Cloaked,

Did you get around to setting your drive as a slave and the new one as a master?

You will be able to access the old drive via My Computer once you load up the newer hard drive.
Re: I fixed the last problem but now I am completely STUCK :( WINDOWS WILL NOT EVEN L

Good idea but I don't have a slave slot on either of my PC's :(.
I am thinking of buying a USB HD with windows pre-installed and the removing my internal HD so my pc boots from the usb one and then plugging in my internal HD and backing it up and formatting it from there then installing windows.
Would that work?
