[SOLVED] How to move my windows 7 installation to my NEW PC?

6942 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  T23GUY
I dont want to lose my current windows 7 installation as I have SO MANY PROGRAMS and customizations done.

Whats the best way without losing everything?
System prep?

---------------------------
Back in the XP days I System Prepped the source int Hardrive, then plugged it into the new PC. Booted the NEW PC with LINUX LIVE CD...
...and just simply Copy and pasted the WHOLE C: Partition from the old HDD OVER to the NEW FORMATTED PC DRIVE... LOL.. and that worked fine.

But now it is tricky because windows 7 has a 100mb system partition on this old HDD.

So what you guys think?

Thanks

Re: How to move my windows 7 installation to my NEW PC?

did win7 come with that computer or did you purchase it off the shelf. If it came with that computer or is oem you cannot move it. If it is retail, then you need to move the harddrive to the new computer and with your win7 disk do a repair install.

Current PC windows was installed by me, everything controlled by me. Same will be on new PC, made my self

Is it the full retail version, because if it is not as mentioned by sobeit, then you can't move it.

windows 7 ultimate
Re: How to move my windows 7 installation to my NEW PC?

Sorry, but that wasn't the question. The question was whether this is a retail or OEM version. A retail version can be installed on several PC's in succession (not at the same time), while an OEM version cannot. An OEM version lives and dies on the computer it was originally installed on, it cannot be installed on or moved to another computer. That is why it is cheaper. The edition of Windows 7 is irrelevant to this issue.

Be prepared for a slew of driver errors when you first boot it up after moving it.

Oh thanks for you replies. Also what if i want to CLONE the OLD Win 7 installation to a New 200mb/s Solid State Drive AND THEN put it into the NEW pC. Whats the best way of going about this?
Re: How to move my windows 7 installation to my NEW PC?

You can use GHOST, Acronis True Image, Clonezilla a quick search on the forum will get you many hits on the term clone
Re: How to move my windows 7 installation to my NEW PC?

I cloned my windows 7 installation from my OLD HDD to my NEW 1TB one.

This is what Ive done so far to make it work. FORGET ALL THEM CLONING PROGRAMS! so here goes

How to Move WINDOWS from OLD HDD to NEW one:

1. backed old hdd to a backup drive with the win 7 built in image backup utility

2. used win7 repair disc (burned from within windows 7 tools) to restore image from backup drive to NEW drive

3. (Optional) used FREE EASUES partition to organise the hdd partitions

4. good to go!
