Hi all buddies!
Well the story is that i upgraded my OS from XP to VISTA, unfortunately i got format my data from a partitian by mistake, then i retrieve that data by "Active Undelete" software remaining within VISTA, then again i comeback to XP OS,but now when i play/Open ".dat, .rm," files, the following message appears:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Now i want 2 ask u all what should i do? Should i giveup efforts to retrieve data, or is there any solution?
Take Care

Re: Help !!!!!!!!

Ouch! My head is still spinning trying to keep up with what you've done. :4-dontkno I would suspect that with the format and the re-installs that any data you have (had??) is well and truly lost to you. I would cut my losses and install a fresh copy of Vista, formatting the drive as you go. Once installed you will most likely still have some problems playing various audio/video files but this can be fixed by downloading the relevant codec packs.

Re: Help !!!!!!!!

Hello Pakiman,

Seems that somehow you restore the old settings but considering the error you provided it means that the means wich media player uses to open the file are not sufficiant at all

if all is up to date. please reinstall windows media player or lookup a freeware player wich specificly opens those *.rm / *.dat files althought .dat files for movie or media extend is unfamiliar to me , the *.rm files can be opened by allot of freeware programs found trough google

just find one install it and the problem will autofix .

if not please provide the exact error the computer gives

hope this helps

Re: Help !!!!!!!!

.dat is a generic extension that many different programs use to hold their data. Are you sure that these files contain media? If so, try Winamp or VideoLan's VLC player, as they tend to recognize more media formats by default than Windows Media Player.

And .rm files are Real Media (RM) files. You will need to install either Real Player or Real Alternative (A freeware Real-compatible codec) before you can play back those files.
