I need help editing (correcing) the RPC portion of my registry.
Here are the details...
XP Pro, sp2. a "company" laptop so I am not allowed to load/run any programs (although I may have 'inadvertently' done so in the past). Uses a Smart Card and SafeBoot before logging into Windows.
It started doing all sorts of weird things, i.e. task bar misbehaving, will not open a new window, will not paste what I've cut or copied, Windows Installer became inaccessible (not that I was trying to install or uninstall anything), among other problems.
Anyway, after a week of readin threads and checking everything remotely related, I traced it back to the fact that the RPC will not turn on automatically or manually.
I cannot do a reload or repair of Windows for fear of causing problems with the company's security software, especially SafeBoot, thereby rendering the computer unbootable.
I found a post showing the default registry setting for rpcss, but I do not know how to replace the current (and yes, different) portions with the correct ones. I am hoping for a command or file I can put on a jumpdrive & load to the desktop and then just open, because my typing skills are non-existent (this request is taking me forever!), and as mentioned I cannot copy/paste on that computer. (I am currently using my home desktop).
I am no computer tech but am somewhat computer literate, and comfortable doing anything you - the expert - tell me I can do. I simply somehow missed learning how to edit my registry without manually typing it in.
Please correct me if I my conclusions or my remedy sound wrong to you.
ALSO, please double-check the default registry setting for rpcss, or just send me the latest correct version if you would please.
