[SOLVED] hard drive

Hi, If i buy an external hard drive to connect to my usb, can i use it straight away or do i need to install anything on it, i havent got the original xp disk, so if i need to install that i'm knackered, i want it really to load things such as, music, pictures, etc.

You will not need any installation, though you may have to format and or partition the drive before it is functional. You will need to assess this on your own, when you connect the drive if it does not appear in My Computer then you will need to configure it.

All the necessary software should already be installed on your computer. Just right click My Computer and select Manage. When that window loads, click Disk Management in the left window pane. From here you should have the ability to format/partition as necessary

The external hard drive once configured and operating is used just like anyother hard drive with the exception that unless the computer BIOS lets it boot up like a regular hard drive thru the USB port the external will not boot up the computer.
