[SOLVED] hal.dll error

921 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  chauffeur2
I get an error about a missing or corrupted hal.dll file on startup.

I have searched the internet and all suggestions use the install cd. I don't have the CD but there is a hp pc system recovery partition on the hard drive. I just run the recovery but there are some important files on the hard drive that were created since my last backup. I've tried booting up with a knoppix cd to copy in a new hal.dll file that I downloaded. The problem with that is that nothing from the Windows folder is recognized. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to correct this corrupted file?

Thanks

Re: hal.dll error

G'Day Burton,

Without a Windows® XP CD there isnt much you can do, apart from attaching the HDD to another computer as a 'Slave' to retrieve your data to CD/DVD or other media; then, use the Recovery Partition once the HDD is back in the 'sick' computer.

Post back with your thoughts.

Kind Regards,

Thanks, thats what I ended up doing. I got an enclosure and just plugged in the sick drive and pulled the files off that. I'll run the HP recovery now and then pop the files back on. Thanks for the help.
