[SOLVED] Firefox: Javascript not opening new windows

13508 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Mort727
Hi. I need some help please.

Since a complete system crash, I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, but no improvement.

The problem is that on some sites where a new window is usually opened, it is now not opening the window. As an example, when visitiing www.nab.com.au and wanting to use internet banking, clicking on the GO button on the top right usually opens a new window, but it is not opening any more. The same applies to www.stgeorge.com.au and other sites using the same javascript to open a new window.

Javascript and Java buttons in Options have both been ticked.

Also, when I quit out of Firefox, it is not completely quitting. I have to use Ctrl-Alt Delete and go into Task Manager and forcibly quit the application, otherwise I cannot even open it again.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Barry

Re: Firefox: Javascript not opening new windows

Hi Barry,

With regards to your first question about the windows not opening, make sure that they are not being blocked by a popup blocker and if you have NoScript installed that you are allowing nab.com.au. Also make sure that you have installed the latest version of Java from the Sun website.

As for the second question about Firefox hanging, try this mozillaZine information to see if it helps.

You may need to uninstall your Java versions (via Control Panel/Uninstall a program) and reinstall because of possible corruption. The mozillaZine article mentions that issues with Java applets could cause Firefox to hang.
Re: Firefox: Javascript not opening new windows

Hi William,

Many thanks for your suggestions. I have updated my Java to the latest, have no pop-up blockers on and am not running noscript. I had already done all this before making this post.

At this time, I have just decided to uninstall Firefox from my pc and use IE8 instead for the time being. I just don't have the time to muck around any more.

Thanks for the help.
Re: Firefox: Javascript not opening new windows

Hey, updating java will not help your problem at all (but it is good practice so no biggy) Java != Javascript.

Anyway, down to fixing your problem (because i can't stand hearing someone say they're going to use IE8 in preference to FF)...

Two things to try:
1) Go to Tools->Options(/Preferences)->Content, Click "Advanced" next to the "Enable Javascript" checkbox(Make sure that's checked too). In the advanced section make sure the advanced options are checked.
2) In the Content Tab see if "Block Popup windows" is checked, if it is click the exceptions button, and see if the sites you need to allow popups for are listed in there with a "Block" next to them, if they are then type them into the text box and click "Allow".

Finally, if all else fails, press [WinKey]+R, type "firefox.exe -safe-mode", press Enter, go to the sites and check if the windows open as they should. If they do then it is probably an add-on problem and you need to go through your add-ons and work out which one is giving you the problem.

You're welcome, Barry. Sorry those suggestions didn't solve it for you.

I'm on that same wavelength. Comparing IE8 to FF3 on my system is like comparing the tortoise and the hare in terms of performance. With IE Tab installed I use FF exclusively.

Jamey,

Thanks so much for your post. I had already uninstalled firefox and was unhappily using IE8, because I thought I had to. However, once I read your post, I decided to reinstall firefox and try your suggestions, even though I knew that pop-ups had not been disabled and I had reinstalled my javascript.

Thankfully, my firefox is working again - perfectly. The problem must have been one of my add-ons, even though they worked before, but one of them must gotten itself corrupted or something. When I uninstalled, I uninstalled completely, so my new installation gave me a fresh start. Now all I gotta do is get all my bookmarks back and I'll be a really happy camper again :)

Thanks again,

Barry

Glad you've got it sorted, (apart from the bookmarks problem), go through that mozillazine link william has posted and you should get somewhere. =]

Re: Firefox: Javascript not opening new windows

Thanks again for your help.

As I had deleted my bookmarks, I was not able to get them back again. However, I did work out how to import my IE bookmarks into Firefox. I did have some in Firefox before that I don't have any more, but I can live with that :)

Have a great day !!

Cheers, have a great day yourself Barry =]

Glad you've got the main problem fixed anyway.

FYI: I found that the Ghostery add-on created a problem. One web site worked then I told Ghostery to not block Omniture. With one web site it would not work with Omniture blocked and then would work when it was not blocked. This site was using pop-up windows.

Fedora 11
Firefox 3
I had the same problem - Java would not open new window AND Firefox would not shut down properly - had to use task manager to terminate so that I could start a new session.

I have Firefox 3 with windows 7 64bit, with Norton 360 v 3

I disabled the Norton toolbar 3.7 (on firefox - tools/Add-ons/Extensions - Disable Norton Toolbar)

It fixed both problems.

It worked for me.... good luck
