Quick one, just to check whether my thinking is correct. Just looking at a broken PC,

motherboard is ECS 761GX-M754

Powers UP,
Tested RAM: OK
Removed graphics used onboard: same result / nothing
disconnected all drives: nothing
Cleared the CMOS: nothing

The person who brought this to me said he was cleaning the pc and he's probably shorted-out something. The problem is I am not getting any beeps and holding the power button down for 4 secs isn't working (strange)..

Busted MOBO? Power supply (even though it powers up?)
The drive is not spinning up as well

Do you have a digital voltmeter to test with?
Does removing all the ram and then attempting to boot produce any beeps?

tried with no RAM - same, not sure whether there is a system speaker - will take a quick look now again - I will now remove the PSU and try use it on my PC - if it works this will rule out the PSU. Back in 15 minutes

OK, PSU is fine - worked on my system. Busted MOBO then? :/

Did you look at the caps for any signs of domed tops or leakage? > Badcaps.net - How To Identify

caps look ok, cannot see any blown up stuff .. there is a pc speaker on board yet it does not signal anything

No beeps from the speaker, no spin on the drives, cdrom does not open, PSU works ok with other PC.

I just want to rule out the CPU so I can get the 30,- pounds MOBO replacement.

No RAM and no beeps from the Mobo speaker indicates a Mobo problem.

Only way to test the CPU would be in a known good motherboard.
But it's unlikely to be a CPU unless he removed it and damaged the pins.

i don't think he would know how to remove the CPU I will now mark this as solved, thanks all!
