[SOLVED] External Hard Drive Not Working

9736 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  JMPC
I have a WDElements 1TB external hard drive and it contains all my videos, music and other files from my laptop. Over 200GB of stuff. On the front it has a small white light that flashes to indicate it is being read then my laptop will confirm it has been read. The other day the hard drive just stopped working and the light continually flashed as if it was being read, only stops when disconnected from the power supply and still the light continues to flash everytime it is connected to a USB port. I tried it on my xbox and still no joy. I was just wondering if anyone could help, or give me any ideas. Because I really do not want to lose everything that is on it. Thanks.

Re: External Hard Drive Not Working

you can run the wd diagnostic utility to see if the drive is good.

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

you can also try taking the drive out of the external case and slave it on a computer and see if you can recover your files.
Re: External Hard Drive Not Working

If I run the diagnostic and it's messed up, what then?
Also:
I would not know how to slave the drive. Should I just take it to a computer shop?
Re: External Hard Drive Not Working

If the diagnostic comes back with errors then you could get a replacement if it's under warranty.

If you only have a laptop you're not going to be able to add the drive to it but if you have a desktop PC you can add the drive as an internal drive (after removing it from the enclosure) and check to see if it can be read.

You could also try a different enclosure to see if the drive will work with a different enclosure.
