[SOLVED] Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

Hello,
When I am using my computer, I will occasionally need to delete things, so I simply press the "Delete" button on the file. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work so well anymore, as about 1/10 times it restarts explorer.exe and all of my explorer windows are gone. It does not display an error message before or after as a popup. If I right click and say delete, it does not restart (but rarely, it will restart explorer.exe if I simply right click). In Event Viewer, each incident comes up as Event 1002, the source as Winlogon, and the type as Information. The Event says:
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This problem has not come up until last night, and the only thing I have installed in the last few days was Bioshock (it was previously installed on the system and I did not have this problem, so I assume it has nothing to do with it).

What should I do to fix it? My system specs are on the side.
Thanks for any help!

Thanks for posting that, I tried everything on that list that applied to XP, and it still seems to crash. I updated the video card driver as well. What else could it be?
Thanks for the replies :)

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

Run sfc /scannow

Insert the Windows® XP CD in your drive. (when it opens up then just X it out).
or you can hold down the shift after cd is inserted.

Start
Run
type
sfc /scannow (note of the space between the c and /).

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows® core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from
the CD.
During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any
browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete.
(This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine.

Nope, I do not use Comodo firewall.

I ran the CD check successfully, but it certainly did not take 45-65 minutes, rather more like 10. Could it have possibly skipped something?
Anyways, I tried that, and unfortunately it's still doing the same thing. Does that mean it's probably a program that's messing with it?

Thanks for the quick responses!

I believe that update is part of Service Pack 3 for XP. Therefore you should have it on your computer in the best and most compatible way.

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

Good tool, I'll be sure to put it on my other computers! Thanks for suggesting it!

It found 5 problems (WinRAR, Bonjour [which isn't even installed, but I reinstalled a newer version so it wouldn't complain about it], Pidgin, Quicktime, and Flash), and I updated everything. Unfortunately, I still have the original problem. What other things might help fix it?

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

Run chkdsk /r
start
run
type
chkdsk /r (notice 1 space between k and /)
Cannot lock current drive

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time
the system restarts? (Y/N)
TYPE: Y
reboot pc now so chkdsk will run.

Note: I have 1 more suggestion if this doent work either.

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

My computer just finished chkdsk, and sadly it still has the same problem. What is your other suggestion?

Thank you so much for all of the help you are providing by the way!

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

I'll try those things when I get home, thanks!

The second link is for Windows NT servers and I'm on XP, will it still be safe to follow those directions?

EDIT: I just tried the first link, and it says the update has already been applied.

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

then nevermind and your right I goofed on the second link...hhhmm
go to
start
run
type
regedit

HKLM\SOFTWARE\microsoft\windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

in the right pane look for:
Shell REG_SZ Explorer.exe
Userinit REG_SZ C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe,

If these 2 entries arent the same, change them to above
reboot pc

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

Hmm, I checked those out and they're exactly the same as what you posted. Could some piece of software possibly be interfering with explorer.exe?

EDIT: I also tried it out in Safe Mode and it still restarts explorer.exe whenever I do the same thing.

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

The only other thing here is that I can think of maybe try
running an online scan to see if anything comes up?

Go here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

once you accept the active X, and databases are downloaded, choose
deep scan, then disconnect from online.

Let us know the outcome?

Note: Im not giving virus or malware advice here, just simply testing to
see if something is interfering in the operation of the context menu, if it
is I will send to virus forum.

Re: Explorer.exe sometimes restarts when I press the "Delete" button

Finished it!
It found mostly cookies, but it did catch a patcher for J River Media Center. I decided to uninstall it, but it would not uninstall. I then reinstalled it and tried again, but it always hung on one file: a dll that had to do with integrating into the right click. I deleted all of the program files for it, restarted, and deleted the .dll, and now everything seems okay. I've been deleting and right clicking for a while and it hasn't messed up, so I think that's what was it.

Thank you soo much Riskyone101 for all of your effort and input. That security scan was definitely the tool that highlighted the source of the problem, and without your suggestion, I would still be frustrated with this problem. Hooray for a less obnoxious computer! :p
