[SOLVED] Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

6002 Views 22 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BCCOMP
After computer crashed, I ran WinXP reinstall CD. Of course, I lost everything that was previously loaded. I'm going again but have no sound. In Device Manager under Other Devices, Ethernet Controller & Multimedia Audio Controller are yellow question marks. I have tried the Resource CD, Dell Support/Downloads, everything I can think of and nothing is working. I am connected to the internet through the USB because the tech says I need a new ethernet card and have to connect right now through the USB. I'm lost at this point. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi,
What is the make and model of the PC?
It sounds to me you just need the drivers for the sound and network.
Have you done a full MS Update?
Bill
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Dell Dimension 4550, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz.
Thanks.
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

I have done microsoft updates.
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

This one is for ethernet

and

This one is for audio/sound

Install both of these drivers, then restart computer. Should work. Let us know.
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

I downloaded the driver you for ethernet. Still have a yellow ? in Device Manager.
The link for audio/sound loaded a page "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", so I could not download from there.
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi,
Did the link that Coolfreak gave you for the Ethernet work? It should have.
The link for the sound driver is here:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...D=DIM_PNT_P4_4550&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
There are two ubder the Audio Tab. I am thinking the ADI one.
Let us know how you make out.

Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Thanks, Bill. The multimedia audio controller download worked! I have sound, finally. The link that CoolFreak gave me didn't work. I didn't realize that I had already downloaded it, but when asked if I wanted to replace it, I did. Still not working. Would it help it you had my Dell Service Tag number?
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi,
You got the sound working? Good News!
Now all you have in the device manager (error wish) is the network controller?
Did you try the Broadcom driver here that Coolfreak gave you?
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=66981.
If it did not work can you give me the error code? Right Click on the yellow error>Properties
Check the BIOS to see if your Network controller is ENABLED!
If that did not work, uninstall the driver Coolfreak gave you and try this one:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=61613

The service tag may help. If you wish not to POST it, Please PM me.

Keep me posted

Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

GIGIWHITE,
Did you find out what caused your computer crash in the first place? I am curious because mine did the same thing two weekends ago and when I reinstalled, I lost my ethernet and audio drivers as well? If you do, let me know.
THanks.
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi Gigiwhite,
Right click on the error>Properties>Details tab.
Post the info in the box (DEV/VEN number). This info will narrow down the correct driver.
Thanks,
Bill
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi BCCOMP:
I did as you asked and came up with the following:
Device Manager>Ethernet Controller>properties>details:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1039&SUBSYS_01421028&REV_81\4&3B1CAF2B&0&40F0
Hope this helps.
Gigi
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi Gigiwhite1
This should be the driver you need:
http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...atid=&impid=&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=84196
Follow the install instuctions.
But be sure the network controller is ENABLED in the BIOS first.
to get in the BIOS hit f2 before the XP screen on bootup. Look for Integrated Devices
If the driver does not work the Nic card maybe damaged. No big deal, you can install a PCI Nic(network card). The one on the motherboard maybe damaged.
Here are some examples:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=PCI+network+cards
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Please tell me how to uninstall the r56237 driver. I just want to make sure I go about it the correct way. I tried the driver you gave me but it didn't work, probably because I didn't uninstall the one CoolFreak gave me first. Wasn't sure how to do it. Then I got a blue screen. Scared me half to death. I thought... here we go again! So, I haven't done anything since except a disc cleanup and defragment. I found the r56237 folder, but do I just delete the whole thing?
Gigi
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi Gigi,
Yes delete the folder. The driver did not install so deleting the folder will do no harm.
The device ID states you have an Intel chip for your lan:
0x1039 LAN Controller with 82562ET/EZ PHY 0x8086 Intel Corporation
After reviewing my previous post the link I gave you may have caused the BSOD, I am sorry for that. The driver you should try is:
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=61613
If this does not work the I would install a PCI LAN Card.

Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Oh, sorry for my Hyperlink mistake. Anyways, I am glad that it did work. As for the ethernet driver, try the one BCCOMP has posted. I also reviewed it all, and it seems that, that should be the one to fix your problem. Let us know!
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

I deleted driver r56237 and installed r52043 and still doesn't work. I will try the PCI LAN card next. One more thing I forgot to mention earlier, I am connected to the DSL modem through the USB port because I couldn't connect with just the cable from the DSL modem to the computer. The technician told me to plug in the USB. I did, and was able to connect that way. Would this have anything to do with the drivers not working?
Thanks a million.
Gigi
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

No,
Going through the USB is just another way to connect DSL.
But , how are you checking to see if the drivers posted were installed?
Do you have an error in the device manager.
The reason I am asking is the Modem is setup for USB connection and not a cable connection. So just plugging in the network cable is not a good test to see if the LAN is working. Your modem would have to be reconfigured for the cable connection and not USB.
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Bill:
I went to RUN, typed in C:\Dell\drivers ENTER. There are all the driver folders. R52043 was there. I opened the R52043 folder, went to the Setup folder, clicked on it and it installed. I guess it had not installed before. Now there are no errors in device manager.
I am still connected to the DSL modem via USB port but the cable from the modem to the computer is plugged in also. The DSL modem would not function unless that cable was plugged in. One of the techs at my ISP told me to unplug the cable from the modem to the computer while using the USB. That didn't work. The next ISP tech told me to plug that cable back in and I did and was able to connect. Now, how do I reconfigure so that I don't have to go through the USB port to connect to DSL?
Thank you so much. I finally have an ethernet controller!
Gigi
Re: Ethernet controller & multimedia controller

Hi Gigi,
Glad you have the errors fixed and have your ethernet controller back:pray:
Have you disconnected the USB connection only to see if it will work?
If that does not work, we will need to know the type of modem (make and model number) and who your ISP is.
I am not the best at this, so bear with me. If I can not get it to work for you I will PM someone to help us.
Thanks,
Bill
