[SOLVED] ethernet after install

1672 Views 21 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Old Rich
I reinstalled my windows xp OS on my older Dell and looks like my only problem is the ethernet/internet connection. Since i cannot access the internet on that machine, seems problematic getting downloads/drivers somehow copied and installed on my older pc. I do have all of the installation cd that came with the Dell, but from what i gather, they should be installed in a certain order... that is what i need to know. If someone could please help with the order, i will try and do another install.
Thanks for any help... my cd's are:
1 - OS windows XP, sp 2
2 - drivers and utilities V.9x/56K data/fax/modem software
3 - driver and utilities Resource cd (device drivers, diag.+utilities)
4 - Application for tool system (support,multi-media,internet software)
5 - Appl. cyberlink power dvd

Re: ethernet after install

I reinstalled my windows xp OS on my older Dell
is this the recover CD that came with the Dell PC

you should have a TAG number on the PC - use that and goto the DELL support website and download the drivers
I would install the chipset drivers straight after the XP CD
Re: ethernet after install

try going to dell support and download your drivers http://support.dell.com/
Re: ethernet after install

let etaf continue to help you out we must have been posting at the sametime. your in good hands with etaf
Re: ethernet after install

Yep, i have a tag, and it is a re-install OS cd, no mention of recovery. What would be the way to download ? to a flash/jump drive? all chip sets and drivers( Intel ). How/where do i load/download to my other older machine? sorry for all the newb ?'s:4-dontkno

Re: ethernet after install

Dell Drivers: You can go to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number and download the drivers and save them to a flash drive or burn to CD to install on the Dell. Be sure to use IE and do not use the Dell Download Manager!

Just download the driver file, save it to the desktop and double click to install

On the list of drivers, click on the driver file:

Then the download button here:

See this for the order they should be installed:

Re: ethernet after install

thanks for the reply, just downloaded the chipset. will look up the order because that link was not up and running...
Re: ethernet after install

Load the Chipset first . . the order of the others is not critical
Re: ethernet after install

hmm, i stopped after the OS install... the 'chipset drive' i downloaded came up showing as an Exceed extractor Application.?? thought this was wierd as i didn't see anything regarding Intel... should i install that ?
Re: ethernet after install

OK, after checking into it i see it is correct in extracting first... back to the project and learning experience...
Re: ethernet after install

I get to try again today. Why do i have to load these drivers anyway ? I have all the cds from Dell that came with. Why wouldn't installing the 'new' chipset after all the Dell cd's/drivers work, if the new chipset extracts 1st?
If anyone could help with what driver to choose from the 'new' Intel set
(i think there were about10), would be much appreciated.
Re: ethernet after install

If you entered your Service Tag Number, it should only present drivers for your configuration.

What Model is the Dell?
Re: ethernet after install

you could use the CDs that came with the PC _ but often the drivers are modified over time and they fix issues - so its usual practice if possible to load the later drivers - but if you want to use the driver CD you can

post the tag number and we can look at the site for you
Re: ethernet after install

thanks guys got it connected. I think i'll hang around, listen (read)+ learn.
Been catching up on 7 years of updates, up to IE8, and service pack 3.
Will be setting up printer and other accessories. Was wondering about the
Intel Chipset, everything thing seems fine but i don't think all of the chipset package has been loaded, should i load all of it?
Also asking for your expert opinions on something like
Auslogics disk defrag., are they better than what comes with Windows?.. should someone run/have both ? thanks again
Re: ethernet after install

If everything is working ok, I would not worry about the chipset driver.

I have used Auslogics and other third party defragers, but frankly could not see any advantage to them. You do not want to use both because they use different algorithms to place files and you woud just be moving them back and forth.
Re: ethernet after install

Just got a new problem, thought i'd post here since my history is here.
I created another user to log in, while logging off to switching user, the screen goes black and reads 'cannot display video mode' and seems to lock up. I do have a newer Dell flat panel that worked before re-install.
again , thanks for any help.
Re: ethernet after install

Can you log onto the original user?
Try loging in and going to monitors check to see if you have mulitple monitors on. Turn on only one monitor if you have only one monitor.
Re: ethernet after install

thanks for the replies, monitor has been ok since i believe went to 16 bit on settings (was 32), left resolutions high. Finished up loading cameras, scanners, etc. since. Also been becoming familiar with things i never heard of before like BHO's... oh my
Re: ethernet after install

So you are good to go?
