Hi folks, wonder if you can help. Am looking to run 2x260 gtx cards on my machine (have a 1000w psu) and the cards require two 6 pin pci-e power inputs each (so 4 in total). Two came with the PSU and I had two other 6 pin ones from a different PSU (a coolermaster) but it seems the two kinds of cable aren't compatible. Do different PSUs use different shaped plugs? If so is there anywhere I can buy them? I've searched a number of sites but can only find adaptors rather than actual cables. I can run one via a molex adaptor, but don't have enough molex outputs from my psu to adapt a second.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Re: Do pci-e cables vary between manufacturers?

The power connectors for GPU's are standard. What is the Brand of the 1000W PSU. One 260GTX requires a minimum 500W so I would be doubtful that even a quality brand 100W PSU would be sufficient for two. You will see a small increase in performance using two GPU's.

Re: Do pci-e cables vary between manufacturers?

Hi Tyree. It's a silverstone psu. I have got the SLI configuration up and running by borrowing a friend's for an evening (though i must admit I didn't actually have time to run any intensive games. If there's not sufficient power is it possible for the PC to start up fine? Is it possible that it will crash at higher load?

A silverstone unit should be good. Are you saying a modular pci-e cable from another power supply doesn't connect to this silverstone? I have a modular coolermaster and it's true the power supply end of the cable is proprietary.

Silverstone PSU's with ZF, ZM are good units.

Ah ok that answers my query! I assumed that all PCI-e cables would be standard for modular units, but I guess they vary from brand to brand. Thanks guys!
