ok well all my components are a few months old but i decided to get a new pc case, I installed everything and made sure all screws were ok and there was nothing to short circuit.

Fired it up and my dvd rw was not showing, so i checked the sata cables and everything was fine, fired it up again and it worked except it cant read anything, it keeps asking for disk to be inserted.

So i checked bios and everything was fine but when i reset the fans started for a second then nothing! when it eventually booted both my hdds had disk boot failures! bios cant see my hdds or my dvd rw, I cant format them because they or any partition cant be detected, ive tried reinstalling with different os' but my hdds dont seem to exist.

I thought it might be a sata problem but an ide drive i installed has now gone the same way! Ive tried reseting the cmos and disk recoveries but nothing works. Have my HDDS gone?

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated thanks!

Re: disk boot failure

Try booting from a Linus disc. That will bypass the Hdd's and let you know if the rest of the system is OK. If the PC boots from the Linux disc, install one Hdd and run diagnostics.
I assume you are using Onboard Graphics?

Re: disk boot failure

Yes ive already tried that, no matter what os i try it doesnt seem to be able to recognise the hdds at all, its like it doesnt exist. Does it mean the HDD is beyond repair? Yes ive already removed gfx card im just using bare bones at the moment.

Re: disk boot failure

If the PC will boot and run from a Linux disc then the Hdd(s) appear to be the problem.

Re: disk boot failure

well i sent my motherboard back and it turned out to be faulty, I don't know if the motherboard was the problem or it was faulty due to psu.

Anyway ive just bought a core i5 760 so im gonna upgrade the rest of the system. And most importantly Im gonna get a better psu this time round.

Anyone got any ideas for a decent and affordable psu so i don't blow my next system up ,lol

Well thanks for the help guys

Re: disk boot failure

Thanks for that, i bought a corsair vx550, put my new system together and then i had a whole new set of problems.

I turned the computer on the motherboard lights came on and then the only thing that worked was the system fan,and dvd RW no beeps or anything, the cpu fan didnt move so i started again with a basic set up and the same thing happens, ive tried changing Ram and Psu and even tried using the stock fan but the only thing that works is the system fan, Ive tried removing the ram altogether but i dont get any beeps, like i said the only things that happen is the led lights on the motherboard itself light up and the system fan spins and the Dvd RW, very annoyed as i haven't even had a chance to boot it.

Does anyone have any ideas as what this new problem could be? I would appreciate any suggestions thanks

Re: disk boot failure

Ok i reset the cmos as you suggested and it finally worked thank you!

However i have a new old problem. My sata dvd rw doesnt work so i was using an ide dvd rw to install windows 7 until i purchased a sata one next week.

The hard drive is new and is recognised in bios but doesnt yet have an OS installed, the ide dvd rw isnt recognised so i can't istall Windows so when i try to boot from windows 7 dvd i get a disk boot failure again, i don't know how to get bios to recognise the dvd drive, I hope the disk boot failure isnt down to my new HDD, Can anyone please help? Thanks again

I should also point out that bios is saying my CPU temp is 88 degrees and system temp is 35 degrees, surely that can't be right?

Re: disk boot failure

it sounds like one of the legs holding the fan and h/sink down has popped up

set sata to be seen as ide in the bios

check the jumper is set correctly on the ide drive

master on the end black plug

slave to the middle grey plug

blue into the m/board

Re: disk boot failure

Ok well i did as you suggested, strangely the legs were all in ok as i thought this was the cause as well, i turned it on and everything booted ok, ive installed windows and everything works fine.

However the weird thing is nothing shows up in bios and the temp is still 88 C, What i mean is that according to bios i have no devices, however the hard drive shows in the boot order.

After having a look round ive heard that their is a problem with my particular make of motherboard showing similair temperature readings which they put down to the bios version, I can't update the bios as i have the latest version, ive had it on for a few hours and its running fine.

Has anyone else heard of this particular problem and how to address it? Is their a desktop CPU temperature Application i could download to test it? Thanks again

Re: disk boot failure

I tried core temp and the cores were all quite high, so i removed the heatsink, re applied the paste and reseated.

The hdd drivers installed straight away and the temperature has dropped and is staying at 38c, so it was obviously a problem with the heatsink.

Anyway problem solved, thanks once again for all your help, it was very much appreciated.
