ok, so I built a gaming computer, and I got this Hard Drive

Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 Internal Hard Drive - Newegg.com

unfortunately, I was DOA, so I've had to send it back to Newegg, and they will be sending me a replacement in about a week or so.

Now,I have a friend that works on computers, and he gave me THIS hard drive that he has never used, to use until the other one gets in.

Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500 GB 3.5' External Hard Drive - 20 Pack - Newegg.com

Just wondering as to which one would be better. Knowing my friend, he may let me keep the Western Digital, if its better, and give him the other one. Hell, he may just let me keep both.lol, in which case, what should I do then?
I was thinking install windows on the better one, and use it for gaming, and put Linux on the other one, just for messing around with, since I am taking computer classes including one in Linux.

oops ,just noticed...its NOT the 20 pack ,just a single WD Caviar Black..lol

guess my friend buys a lot of them maybe, since the 20 pack is the only thing I saw on Newegg, then again, he IS a computer guy

thanks in advance for any information/help

Re: Difference between two hard drives

The Barracuda drives are Seagate's entry level drives. 2 year warranty. Nothing fancy but they work. More or less on par with Western Digital's Caviar Blue series.

The WD Caviar Black is Western Digital's upscale line; 5 year warranty.

Re: Difference between two hard drives

Both drives are basically the same except the WD has a 32MB Cache / 5 yr. warranty compared to the Seagate 16MB Cache / 2 yr. warranty.
The WD is also a discontinued model.

WD normally does not ask a proof of purchase as long as the the drive is not already registered to somebody else name. If you need to RMA you can register durin the process of RMA. i have rmaed 3 drives within last 4-5 months.
So, if ur friend has not registered drive on his name then you will get warranty service even if u did not buy the drive. They just go with the serial number, i dont know how they track approx purchase date though.
