Running Vista on a Dell XPS M1330. I use it for surfing, storing music, writing documents and making videos.

Problem: Whenever I want to Publish a movie I have finished it takes ages to complete the process. A simple 2:00 minute video of nothing but a title page took over 20 minutes this morning.

Is this a processing problem? I only have 20 GB free out of a 100 GB HD? Would defragging help speed things up?

I know my lappy is old but I wondering if there was anything I could do?

Re: Dell XPS Slow Processing

Hello fastball29 and welcome to TSF,

You are a little low on HDD space. Defragging could well help you out.

How much ram does your system have? Encoding video and audio uses a lot of RAM.

Also, what programs do you have starting with Windows?

Defragging would help if it's needed. You can also try to empty you temporary files, backing up some of your music and vids onto CD's to clear disk space. I would also download Ccleaner and run it to clean your registry.

Defragging right now. Just out of curiosity, where must I look to locate my temp folder?

And please forgive my ignorance but how do I know which programs start upon boot up?

Thanks for the assistance!

To clear your temp files you go to Internet Explorer/tools and you'll find an option to clear your temp files. To see what starts with your computer go to start, type in the search box "msconfig." Then go to the startup tab. On that screen right click and choose "select all." right click again and click copy. Then you can post them here.

Also, press At, ctr, delete buttons and open task manager. Go to services tab and also post those results in a separate post. This will tell us everything running in the background on your computer.

IE taken care of and here is the list. Wouldn't let me copy and paste so I snipped.

Also have an Seagate external HD. I'll move 50 GBs of old film to there.

Also include the amount of system memory your computer has.

Right click on computer and select properties. It should look like the attached picture. The amount of memory is listed in the outlined area.

Re: Dell XPS Slow Processing

Moving stuff to an external is a great idea. The more that you have on your hDD the slower it works. I also see you have carbonite. You can use them for storage as well. Now to your startup programs, these I know can be disabled and run manually when you use them, Winzip, Quicktime, itunes, Google update, Goofle desktop, Adobe acrobat reader. You may want to google the others and see if they're needed.

Just finished disabling and did a quick reboot.

Size: 104 bytes (104 bytes)

Size on disc: 4.00 KB (4,096 bytes)

Thank you both for all of the help. You guys are alright by me.

Re: Dell XPS Slow Processing

UPDATE:

Editing speed is much faster and less choppy. Publishing still takes time though. I will continue to follow the windows defragging schedule and free up even more space on my hard drive.

Thank you both for everything!
