my computer acted very strange for a few days now...
it randomly shuts down and emits a loud nonstop beep...

its allmost like this problem i had before but without a broken screen...

same setup but diffrent screen and im 100% sure its not an overheating problem or an error code/message...

anyway, i have removed tree of the four RAM-sticks a few times and its run without crashes but its not 100% reliable...

and running a computer with one gig of ram isnt exacly fun...

im starting to suspect one or more parts are broken... just dont know with part...

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

Have you done anything new to this computer before this started happening? A full spec of your system would be handy. But off hand with not much info. Power supply. Always a great scape goat. Im not sure whats wrong with my system when I upgrade my cpu but the psu can be the cause of SOOOOO many problems, so thats where Im starting. The psu doent have to get hot to shut down. It just has to be bad. But heres a bad thought. If its been going bad for days, how many other pieces of hardware is it taking with it? Mobo and HD are the most common victums. Not sure if ram can be fried by a bad psu or if it just doesnt work.

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

i havnt touched the innards since last time it broke down (besides cleaning)...

ill give you the works:

PSU: Antec TruePower Quattro 850W
MOBO: ABIT IN9 32X-MAX
Processor: INTEL Q6600 CORE2QUAD 2.4GHZ
DDR2: 4x1GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
OS: Vista Premium 64-bit

i have read that some of that PSU model has problems with the 8800 but ive only seen Sentinel once (when it was new and un-updated, assumed it was an error)...
i havnt checked if its one of those flawed ones since the serialnumber is on the other side of the PSU, have to remove half the computer to get to it....

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

the beep is coming from the GPU and not the MOBO... cant find a beep code list for either of them...
i dont think its a temprature problem since it can beep like this when its cold...
it might be insufficient voltage/ampage but i dont know how to chech this...

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

where are the bios tempretures and voltages
check on the ram manufacturers web site for the voltage range for your ram
the m/b may default to low and you may need to lift it

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

ok i love this... its a Patriot RAM, model PC2-6400, and theres 15 of them............

voltages range from 1.4v to 2.2v...

EDIT: yay i winn the idiot-award 08, it says on the RAM stick what it is...

EDIT2: 1.8v it says, time to verify

EDIT3: it was set to 2.0v, dosnt seem like much.... time to checkout the PCIe settings...

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

i tweaked the voltage and i managed to keep the computer going for 25-30 mins, then it threw a fit again...

i think the PSU is to blame for all of this... the beep is a lowpower beep (i think) but when im on the computer sentinel dosnt show up, it just crashes instantly...

maybe i need to "reset" it or something...

Ps. i wonder if the (Sunbeamtech Chromatic Windmill) fan controller can have something to do with this... it was acting abit weird around the time the computer started crashing... i moved the two fans it was controlling over to the MOBO after the crashes started...

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

that should run without problems
we stopped recommending antecs as they started using lower grade components
check your voltages in the bios

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

ok im convinced its the PSU thats broken... its been acting up since i got it...

i think i even heard electric arcing inside the PSU once...

going to have a chat with the company i got it from... wont even bother with sending an email to antec...

Re: crash and loud beep randomly

ok i just found out whats wrong all along, found this on antecs support site (on only the US section for some reason):

1. What is the proper way to power my PCI-E video card with two power connectors on the card?
You should always use one of Quattro's 8-pin PCI-E connectors even if you only have 6-pin PCI-E connectors on your video card. If your video card has two PCI-E connectors, you should use one 8-Pin PCI-E connector (remove the 2-pin portion) and one 6-Pin PCI-E connector plugged into the red port on your TPQ power supply.

the guys i ordered my computer from had used 2x PCIe8 connectors when they put my computer together...
i asked the support guy about this last time my computer failed, he said it didnt mather...
seems like my suspision was correct allmost from the begining...
