ECS 648FX-A2 mobo, with pent 4 processor 3E ghz,1mb l2-cache, 8oo mhz PGA-478. Built in Jan 2006. Pc has been acting slow on web pages and not typing fast. Now it won't boot. I get the first screen listing the cpu, mobo info and "Press delete for setup" and it stays there. Nothing will make it continue. I have installed a brand new ps, but it does not help at all. How can I tell if it is the mobo or cpu?

Re: cPU or MoBo failed?

CPU's are pretty bullet proof.
Remove all the RAM, boot the PC and listen for any beep codes from the Mobo speaker.
No RAM and no beeps indicates a Mobo problem.

Re: cPU or MoBo failed?

I had a bad video card, and replaced it with an old low res one. I reset the cmos and now I get "disk failure" message. I will do as you suggest tomorrow and then put my OS disk back in and see if I can repair.

Brand & Model of the GPU you are getting and Brand & Model of your PSU?
A low quality/underpowered PSU is a primary cause of GPU failure.

Re: cPU or MoBo failed?

I restored my last backup with Acronis and now I get the message "NTLDR is missing"
I am trying to restore Win XP, but don't have a recovery disk. Can you help?

My caps all look fine. I am pretty sure it is a corrupt mbr. I originally had win 7 on half of the 500 gb drive and win XP on the other. I loaded win 7 from win XP to try it, but my last backup had only Win XP which I restored.

Things have gone from bad to worse. I pulled out all the ram and when I boot I get one long beep. I can't boot from any drive, floppy, hdd, dvd. Get "disk failure insert system disk and press enter" message.

All the drives are in the bios. I don't get any post beep. I have win XP pro disk, Acronis boot disk, floppy dos disk., and none will boot. The power supply is new. I can't run HD diagnostics. No drive will boot

I have formatted a hard drive on another pc and installed it. I can access my dvd drive and new hard drive now. I start loading windows files from the disk. when it needs to reboot and continue, it reboots and starts loading setup again from the beginning. I have tried two different windows disks and it is the same.

The OS won't work on your PC if you installed the OS to the Hdd using a different PC.

Re: cPU or MoBo failed?

I tried my acronis backup and restored an earlier backup sucessfully. I am up and running now. I have plugged in all my periphials and so far it is OK. I appreciate all your advice. Thanks. I will have to wait and see what happens now.
