After having a major problem with the 'hal.dll' file and my computer not even started, i gave in and finally managed to do a clean install of XP.

- Im still missing the 'SM Bus Controller' I've tryed doing this, but i dont have a clue what im looking for.

- The computer uses a Belkin Dongle to connect to the internet. It connects fine for a few minutes, then disconnects. And then wont find the wireless network unless the computers rebooted.

I think thats it actually.

Thanks in advance,
Adam.

Re: Couple of problems with recently re-formatted computer.

The SM Bus is the chipset driver . . you can find it on the manufactures website. What Brand and Model is the pc?

Look in Device Manager for other devices that need drivers

Re: Couple of problems with recently re-formatted computer.

After downloading, and installing. It gives instructions, device manager - update driver.

I follow the instructions. But it says 'wizard could not find the software on your computer for...'

Also the wireless isnt working at all today. However there are no other errors in the device manager, apart from the 'SM Bus controller'

Thanks.

Re: Couple of problems with recently re-formatted computer.

Did you get an error message when following these steps?

8. Click the + (plus) sign next to “System devices” or "Other devices".
9. Right-click "SM Bus Controller" or the device you want to update, and
then select "Update Driver...".
10. Select "No, not this time", and then click NEXT.
11. Click NEXT to install the software automatically.
12. Click FINISH to complete the installation.
13. Restart the system upon completion of the update.

Re: Couple of problems with recently re-formatted computer.

I follow them steps.

And i get the..

'Wizard could not find the software on your computer for..

Sm Bus controller'

I tryed telling it to search a specific location to where the file is saved, but it came back with the same thing. Saying it couldnt find the software.

Thanks.

If that does not do the trick, remove the sm buss controller and reboot . . see if windows loads it

It's the chipset . . in Device Manager. It should have been installed before any other drivers. If you installed other drivers first, that could be the problem

Re: Couple of problems with recently re-formatted computer.

The only other drivers that needed to be installed, were the Belkin Wireless and the audio one.

My Belkin dongle is fully installed and it doesnt show any errors, however it isnt showing the wireless networks (yesterday it was working breifly).

I may be wrong. But i think i need to be on Windows SP2 to be able to install it. But im on SP3.
Is there a way to remove SP3?

Re: Couple of problems with recently re-formatted computer.

You don't have to be on SP2. First go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In the Device Manager do you see any yellow exclamation marks? Is it for the SM bus controller? When you download a driver, it Unzips to a file on your C: drive. Take note of where it goes (usually called Drivers). Browse to that file, and double click the Setup file in there. That should start the Install of the driver. If there is no Setup file, then follow Rich's instructions for Right clicking the SM Bus controller and Update the Driver. If there isn't a yellow mark in the Device Manager, then the device is installed and working correctly.
