[SOLVED] Corrupt FAST Images

6984 Views 26 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Deleted090308
i backed up my data using files and settings transfer wizard before i replaced my corrupt hard drive with the new one dell sent me. everything went to my external hard drive, and the files compressed fine and everything. now i cant get them to extract using the wizard. i have tired everything with the wizard and it says that the directory doesn't have the files at all. the folder "USMT2.UNC" wont do anything. they are .dat files. can someone help me figure out how to extract my files? i have taken them off the external and tried doing it from my desktop as well. i keep hearing about a tool called FASTconv but I dont know how to use it. any help would be appreciated!

can someone please help me?
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

If you still have the old drive, it might be easier to attach it as a slave and copy your files
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

i had to reinstall windows to prove that wouldnt fix it to dell so all my files are .dat now.
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

Ouch . . usually all you have to do is run their drive diagnostics. I don't use FAST, but see if this helps:

Re: Corrupt FAST Images

i have followed all those steps. it wont recognize that the .dat files are there...

Re: Corrupt FAST Images

I have asked for help . . we should have someone who speaks FAST
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

Are you using the same version of XP as before?
If you had SP 2 installed when you created the backup - then SP 2 has to be installed to restore it.
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

the past one and this current one are on SP2.
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

What's the name of the DAT file? It should be IMG00001.DAT.
Another file named Status should also be in the USMT2.UNC folder.

If KB896344 is installed - try removing it.

Re: Corrupt FAST Images

yes, the status file is in there

how would i remove the KB... file?
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

Take a look in add/remove programs and put a tick in the show updates box at the top of th epage.
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

i dont see it on that list. should it be?
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

i urgently need these files. if someone could help me on aim or msn that would be awesome.
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

Right click the files >> Properties and make sure they're not "read only".

If the KB896344 update isn't installed - do that.

Look at posts no. 1 & 2 here for FASTconv instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t24464.html
Re: Corrupt FAST Images

ive gotten somewhat closer with fastconv. heres what i posted on bleepingcomputer on another support post i made:

"anyone with any knowledge of FASTconv, here is what i am doing

I have a folder in c:\ called FAST that contains the folder des, temp, and my USMT2.UNC folder along with FASTconv. here is the exact command line i use:

C:\FAST>fastconv /v /s:usmt2.unc /d:des /t:temp

i get the error "Source store is invalid."

anyone know what i am doing wrong??"

i will install that update and get back to you.
