I have windows xp home, and pro. I have always been able to control or at least gain access to programs running in the back ground. I have also been able to use task manager to find out who and what is causing all the ruckus. I now have vista ultimate downloaded to one of my computers, with this OS I have no way what so ever of getting to and stopping the programs running in the back ground. I should put it this way, I don't know how. I have noticed that I am also not able to go into add/remove programs and see a listing of all programs on my computer. The only programs that it will let me see are the ones I downloaded to the computer myself. It may be set up to keep people like myself from messing up my computer which is great, but I would like to be the one making that decision. Anyway, how can I get to, and see what programs are running in the background. The programs may be required to run in order to maintain the system which is fine, I just want to know who and what is running. Task manager is out of the question, it shows nothing.

Re: control

Hi donk

Sometimes the best way to do things is to use 3rd part programs. Just asking, you said:

I now have vista ultimate downloaded to one of my computers
You mean that you downloaded the OS to your computer, was it done by a file-sharing program or website? Also did you mean, installed into your computer? I am guessing you meant installed, so we will move on to 3rd party programs.

The Sysinternals Microsoft Technet tool Process Monitor is a great tool to use when it comes to tweaking your system and watching what your computer does. Also for Add/Removing Programs to see the most things up to updates, you can use the program called CCleaner. It is a great tool that you can use to clean up your computer, clear your registry of errors, and easily remove any program from your computer including updates.
