Lately my computer has been crashing extremely often. Sometimes it'd crash the moment it booted up, other times it can go for a few minutes before it dies. Sometimes it runs just fine. I've scanned the computer for viruses and it turned out clean. I repaired and defragmenter the disks and registry as well, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I scanned with avast free antivirus and used avg tuneup for the defragmentation. I'm running windows xp professional service pack 3.

If there's anything else you need to know, please tell me, as I'm not familiar with how I should present my situation. Thank you

Try opening the box and clean out the inside. Pay particular attention to the fan and surrounding area. Go to this site for complete instruction: How to clean a computer

Re: Constant crashes for no apparent reason (windows xp)

As Corday said, the main reason for a computer crashing is because of overheating or a failing Power Supply Unit (PSU). Turn off the computer and blow out all fans with compressed air. Turn the computer on and make sure all fans are spinning with out obstruction. Look at the PSU label and report the Make, Model# and Wattage. Boot into Setup (Bios) to PC Health or some such. Here report the 12V line for the PSU also report the temperatures.

I'm running windows xp professional (with
Service pack 3)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE
Intel Celeron D CPU 3.06 GHz
Motherboard manufacturer: Colorful Technology and Development Co., LTD
1GB RAM

System temperature: 20 Celsius/68 Fahrenheit
CPU temperature: 98 Celsius/208 Fahrenheit.

And I've got no idea what specifically you're asking for vis-a-vis the 12v line voltages, so here:
**MainBoard Voltage Items**
CPU VCORE 1.32V
+12 V 12.51V
+3.3V 3.32V
DIMM VCC 1.85V
VCC CHIP 1.53V
+5V 5.14V
VBAT(V) 3.10V
3.3VSB 3.21V

Your PSU is looking good in the Bios. but you are running hotter then you should. did you try any of the suggestions for cleaning out your computer as in the Second quote?

No, as compressed air is hard to find here in china. I was going to go look for some again sometime the next few days, however.

if you have a vacuum cleaner that can reverse (blows air out) you can use that. Be sure the computer is not plugged in, and that you do not touch anything inside of the computer with metal. Obviously do this outside so the dust blows away from you.
