903 Views 16 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Troy_Jollimore
ok so when I normally start my pc i cant access the internet. I use the built in diagnostic problem program. First it tell me to reset my winsock cause somethings wrong with it, and I do, but then after i restart my pc i still can't connect to internet . So i run the diagnostic thing again and it says something like "contact the person that manages your windows product support or go online to support.microsoft.com/winxp" and I did and nothing helped me. But for some strange reason I can access the internet when i run my pc in safe mode with networking. So how can i fix it so than i can access the internet in normal pc mode...? I've tried alot of programs and different form of resetting it in the command prompt. Can anyone help PLZ!!! :'(

Re: connection problem

If it works in safe mode with networking but not normal mode it's likely some form of firewall or security program that is causing the problem. Do you have a router that you are trying to connect to the Internet through?
Re: connection problem

when did this start happening?
If it was when you reformatted or something you need drivers.
Re: connection problem

im not using router im connecting directly from a modem and i didnt reformat anything
Re: connection problem

Ok, if you have no router then you need a firewall program. Please open a DOS window (type CMD in a Run or Search window depending on whether you have XP or newer) then type ipconfig /all and press enter in the DOS window.

If you do this both in safe mode and in normal mode, check to see if you are getting an IP address in both modes. Likely it'll be the same IP address. Make sure the subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server addresses also match. Please post what the numbers are.

You also didn't answer the question, "When did this start happening?" Do you remember what you did or were doing when it started happening?

system restore was a fail. it may be because the earliest i could restore it to was the 8th which was a system checkpoint
Re: connection problem

Verify if there's Proxy settings in your browser and disable it. Here's how.

Click on the Fix It button to reset your Windows Hosts File.

Please download the Free version of Malwarebytes, scan and remove infection if there's anything found, no need to post the results.

Re: connection problem

Ohh...that's really great to hear that you have internet connection now and I'm happy for you.

Once in a while you may run Malwarebytes, it's a pretty good Anti-Spyware software.

You're Welcome!
I tell people to run it once a week at the least. ;)

ybother, Do you remember what malware it said was causing the problem? Or did it show quite a few entries in the results?
