[SOLVED] Connecting to the internet help

924 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  etaf
Hi, my laptop has recent been having trouble connecting to the internet. I thought it was my router but it isn't as my ps3 and brothers laptop work perfectly fine with the internet. I'm positive it's a problem with my laptop and since i'm not very educated on the subject i'll describe what I see/know:
When I boot my laptop up I try to connect to the internet and it gives me no option to connect to it, I tried manualy connecting, no luck. I've tried most obvious things and have confirmed that it's my laptop. Anyway help would be apreciated. Thanks :)

Wireless, the results all ended in "Media disconected"
Re: Connecting to the internet help

whats the make and model of the PC

most laptops have a switch to turn the wireless on/off - or a combination keys used FN + one of the "F" keys
you haven't switched the wireless off

can you connect the laptop to the router by cable and see if it works on cable OK

can we see the following here

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

Xirrus: The Leader in High Performance Wi-Fi - Advanced IT Wi-Fi Networking Tools
Direct link to the program is here Xirrus: The Leader in High Performance Wi-Fi - Advanced IT Wi-Fi Networking Tools
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.

I did the above and nothing seemed to help but I am not sure if you know what my problem is. Basicly my Laptop isn't detecting the router it's detecting every other one it can except mine. I tried manualy conecting to it and I get this message saying "This network exists, Connect to it?" I try to click it and it brings up the list of routers and mine isn't there. It's simply not connecting to it because it can't find it. I've tried going closer to the router or moving different places, not helping. Thanks anyway.
The model is a Toshiba Eqium.
Re: Connecting to the internet help

I thought it was my router but it isn't as my ps3 and brothers laptop work perfectly fine with the internet.
this is still the case, so the wireless router is broadcasting the signal all OK and can connect OK
would you confirm

can you post the info requested above - by copying to a working PC

Re: Connecting to the internet help

all those test show a good connection to the internet - how is that connected - by cable or wireless ?

can you also post the ipconfig /all

so something is blocking you access the internet from browser on the PC - could be a firewall setting -

have you had or have on the PC, Norton, Mcafee etc ?

also check the internet options for a proxy server
Remove any proxy settings
Check your browser's settings, remove or uncheck any proxy settings if found

Re: Connecting to the internet help

If above suggestion didn't work pls remove your current wireless profiles then re-add it again. Make sure that you type in the correct network encryption.
Removing an existing wireless "profile"

You may also remove your network security from the router and see if you're able to connect or try WEP Security.

I'm an idiot lol, I did those tests when I had my Cable in when my problem is that the wireless won't work:
It just says media disconected when I try to do it without the cable.
Re: Connecting to the internet help

OK  suspected it may be

would you do the suggestions by 2xg and also post an xirrus screen shot
make and model of the PC
are you running vista
and from the ipconfig /all - whats the adapter called ?

I fixed it, turns out all I had to do is change the channel.
excellent - thanks for letting us know
You can mark the thread solved - from the dropdown " thread tools" at the top of the page - choose "Mark Solved"

just for completeness - you may want to post an xirrus sreen shot and we can then see if there's likely to be any further interference and advise on a channel - wireless channels do overlap each other
