Really resurrecting this thread.

Long time reader, first time poster, a lot of the threads in here have been a lifesaver and I am having a similar problem to the OP of this thread and thought it was better to resurrect it rather than starting a new one.

If I have missed a post addressing a similar issue please let me know as there is nothing worse than the ol "help my computer is broken but I can not read" post.

Finally really stripped the machine down after reading the above, on some cardboard and when I put my processor in it turns on and off (noted by fan powering on and off)
When the processor comes out the fan powers up no problem, no beeps whatsoever.

The motherboard is currently connected to 4-5 items.
24 and 6 pin power from power supply
1 of the noctua fans (plugged into the CPU_Fan power outlet on the MB
The small bundle of cables connecting the MB to the power buttons, PC beep speaker, etc.
The CPU, when out it starts up, fan motors away no problem. CPU goes back in the fan powers up for about 1s then goes off for 2-3, then repeats.
At no time are there any beeps from the MB.

Is it possible I got a bad processor?

Many thanks for anyone that has a minute to impart some knowledge and to those of you who have contributed to other threads that I have leeched information from over the last couple of years.

Re: Just built and the computer powers on and off in 3 second intervals

I also hooked up my graphics card just now without any power to it and got some beeps (did it to test that I would get system beeps and had the speaker correctly attached)

Re: Computer won't start properly

Did you use Artic Silver thermal paste or what solution did you use? It almost sounds like you have either a overheating issue (either thermal paste issue or CPU not clamped clear down in) or another possibility is that you might be shorting out because one of your motherboard posts (standoffs) either in the wrong place or do not have them lined up. (there should be about 9 posts in there, one for every hole and no more, and no less)

If it is overheating, You might have to redo the thermal paste.

Tell us step by step, what happens when you turn it on. Example - I turn it on and it starts, but before it goes on or gets to a post beep, it turns off and then restarts...ect...you get the picture on how to explain it. We need to get this one narrowed down some.

Re: Computer won't start properly

The memory has been out for testing.
I used the Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste that came with my CPU cooler.
As I said before I ran these tests outside of the case eliminating the chance that 9 posts could be causing a short.

With the processor, 8pin, 24pin, and 1 fan attached to MB (NOTHING else, no ram, vid card etc)
I turn it on.
It powers up for about 1-1.5s (I can tell as I have a fan attached to easily monitor the power).
Then shuts off and remains of for 1-2s
Then repeats, turns on, then off.

When I REMOVE the processor, leaving in the 8pin, 24pin, and 1 fan attached to MB (NOTHING else, no ram, vid card etc)
It powers on, fan runs consistently, stays on until I turn it off.

At no point are there any beeps from the MB, again I left the graphics card plugged in, not powered earlier today to ensure the MB beeps could be heard.

Had to work a double shift tonight and am in no shape to work on a machine, thanks for the input looking forward to any thoughts you later nighters might have.

Re: Computer won't start properly

With no beeps coming from the MB and the symptoms above I am tempted to say the processor was DOA although I have never run into that before.

Re: Computer won't start properly

I will see what I can do, when reading up on this MB, processor etc I was under the impression that a 650 would be enough so I went ahead and got a 750 to be sure. I will see if I can get my hands on an 850 but it will most likely mean ordering a new one which may take me a few days.

Re: Computer won't start properly

on the nvidia site in the specs it recommends 550+ for the card usually adding 50% puts you in the ballpark
it lists it's top end at over 200w from experience we usually know this equates out at a 850 or better

Re: Computer won't start properly

Gotcha, I have an 850 on the way, I just don't see how a 650 would not be enough when literally there is only 1 small fan and the CPU plugged into the MB.

Re: Computer won't start properly

Yup just tried it again with the following plugged plugged into the motherboard.
cpu
ram
video
speaker

Same thing, the system powers on for about 1s, spins the fans etc, lights up the lights on the power/reset buttons (on the case connected by pins to speaker, reset, power buttons)
Then the power goes off, fans spin down etc.
About 1s later the process starts over, no beeps at any time.
